Inspired by the classic Crossfire game, I have created OpenFire, a modularly designed, up to 6 player take on the fast paced, tabletop marble hockey board game! With this redesign of the classic you can now compete against your whole family!
For anyone unfamiliar with the original, players try to knock two pucks into their opponent’s goal by launching small bearing balls across the board at the pucks.
In my redesign of the game I have tried to stay fairly close in spirit to the original, however I made a few notable changes/improvements:
- I made the board hexagonal instead of rectangular/oblong, so that up to 6 people can play at once, instead of just 2.
- I added removable bumpers so that the player count can be adjusted anywhere between 2-6.
- I made the launcher design more ergonomic, as that was a common issue with the original.
- I have designed the board and launchers to be modular, so individual parts can be repaired, redesigned, or replaced without having to reprint too much.
- I have designed the board to use hardboard as the play surface, like the 1970s edition of the game, instead of thick cardboard like the more recent editions.
Included in the downloads are all the files required to print this, along with a PDF set of assembly instructions, which includes a parts list, notes, and build process photos.
This project was designed around hardware from the imperial system since that is what I had on hand when I modeled everything, and at that point I hadn't yet decided on sharing it with a broad audience. I haven't had a chance to look much into equivalent metric hardware options, however finding substitutes does seem doable.
If anyone has any improvements or accessories they want to model, feel free to do so! I just ask that they also be shared freely with the community!
