This gift box has a secret: to open it, you must spin it!

The lid features a mechanism with four floating latches that slide into place. These latches lock the box shut and will only release when centrifugal force pushes them outward simultaneously. Each latch independently prevents the box from being opened, so only by spinning the box can all the latches move into their outward positions, allowing the lid to lift off.

This puzzle box is perfect for hiding small gifts or creating a fun challenge for the recipient. It’s an engaging blend of physics and ingenuity that’s sure to impress!

100% printed - no hardware, fasteners, or adhesives required. No additional support is required.

Free for a limited time. Please collect it, like it and download it now to help support me in the league competitions. Thank you.

Revisions and Updates I occasionally update and revise my designs. When I do, I’ll document the changes here. Check back periodically for the latest revision notes or if you’re experiencing any issues with a model.

2024-11-18: Please note that if you downloaded this before 2024-11-18 1300 PST the lid needs to be downloaded again. There was a problem with the alignment of the support. Please download the revised part.

2024-11-19: I have improved the fit of the "grid plate". There is now a version 1v01a.

2026-03-11: Turns out the previously uploaded grid plate was not working correctly. I have now updated it. The new version is 1v01b.

I ran out of red, so the ribbon 'pin' and edges of the ribbon got the 'whatever I have' treatment, lol. Excellent print! Fitment is perfect and it is nice and strong for this size. Time to get some foam liner and wait for more red PETG to arrive ;) Thanks for the great work!

I'm not able to open "Spin Release Gift Box 1V01a grid plate.stl" with any program. Is there a problem with this version of the grid plate?

I have not had anyone tell me there were any issues. Can you email me at logicalplanet3d gmail.com and I can work through it with you. And, send you a new file if needed.

I am struggling to get the grid lid file to read into my slicer. Anyone else seeing this? all other files were fine.

Paul B

My best guess is that you need to enable "detect thin walls" or Arachne, depending on your slicer/printer. If you can tell me the slicer you are using, I can be more specific. Also, if you want to email me (logicalplanet3d gmail.com) the G-code file, then I can take a better look.

Please be aware, I just realized I posted a version of the lid that has a problem with the print support. It will fail if you try to print it. I have posted a revised version now but there does not appear to be a way to communicate that to all the people who downloaded it already. Sorry for any inconvenience. The new lid version is labelled v101a.

Just came to the comments to see why I couldn't print the lid. Have downloaded 1v01a, giving that a shot now.

So sorry for the inconvenience. There is currently no way to communicate to the people who have downloaded a model. But I have asked thangs to look into adding that feature so I can let you know in the future. BTW I have revised the "grid plate" as well now. You do not need to reprint it if you have printed it already. It is just a better fit but not a critical revision.

oh, and also, I need to make sure that everyone knows, you need to have "Detect Thin Walls" set ON in your slicer. That is needed for the Lid Support to print properly.

Hi! Another beautifully designed item!
Is this scaleable? It seems a bit big for what I might use it for. Just checking before I start it off.
Tis the season!! Thanks for your excellent work!

What size do you want? And the short answer is… I am not sure. I would be cautious. But I am happy to adjust the design if I can for you. Let me know.

I am thinking a jewelry box/case similar to a ring case. It occurred to me that the spung latches and posts might be a little thin to hold up if it gets too small though. The design is so cool already so I wouldn't want to mess it up by making the parts too weak for being reusable.

Paul B
logicalplanet

Yes, thanks, after sleeping on it I think I feel the same. It would be difficult to scale down or to make smaller except... I can easily reduce the height. But it is kind of classic proportions right now for a gift box.

I really appreciate you thinking about it, and furthermore just by making really awesome designs! I've learned a lot from your designs, and really love the functionality you incorporate. Thank you =-D
