I love to design and make things that we can use. My goal is commercial-quality, functional and innovative designs that provide utility, solve problems, and improve quality of life. but sometimes also just things that are fun!

I am driven by the virtually unlimited potential of 3D printers to bring ideas to life. I am particularly passionate about:

  • Utility and Functionality: Crafting designs that allow you to do things you couldn’t do before, or can now do more easily or effectively.
  • Quality of Life (QoL) Improvements: Designing tools and aids that simplify tasks, organize spaces, and enhance efficiency.
  • Games and Puzzles: Creating fun and challenging puzzles that leverage the complexity achievable with 3D printing.

I try to test every design I upload on multiple printers and using multiple materials to ensure as best as possible your success when printing my designs.

This reusable spool for Bambulab Filament refills is simple to print, snap together and nestable making them quite convenient.

The spool consists of two nearly identical parts which you print and then mate together by simply twisting them. The difference between the two halves is a small nub on the core of one half that is used to index the cardboard core on the Bambulab refill. There is a detent to hold them in position but you can reverse twist them to separate the halves just as easily. They also can be nestable for storage

I have included a printable snap-on label card for marking what filament is in the spool. The card also has some slots so if you remove a partially used spool you can zip-tie the label to the partial spool before putting it in storage. The card can snap onto multiple locations and on either side of the spool.

Another feature I added which is out there but I did not like how it was done on the ones I looked at was the ability to add zip-ties to the partially used filament roll before removing it from the spool. I made the side slots for inserting the zap strap extend to inside the spool diameter where there is a space for the strap to pass under the filament core. And, then I created offsetting additional space that allows the re-useable spool to be twisted and separated without interference with the now-installed zip-tie.

Lastly, I added more holes for inserting the end of the filament to tie it down. It always bothered me that some of the spools from the manufacturers have very few holes in the sides so you have to unspool some filament to reach the hole. Not a big deal… unless you are OCD. ugh.

I also have made a spool for: eSun https://than.gs/m/999752 Das Filament https://than.gs/m/1142092

100% printed - no hardware, fasteners, or adhesives required. No support is required.

Print Settings:

Material = I recommend PLA or PETG but any material should work.
Nozzle = 0.4mm Layer height = 0.2mm Line width = 0.4mm Wall count = 4 (1.6mm) Infill = 40%

Commercial Licensing is available through my logicalplanet Memberships here on Thangs. I will customize and provide commercial support to members on request.

I am committed to helping everyone get great print results to the extent I can so please contact me if you are having issues I enjoy trying to help resolve those challenges. I welcome requests, suggestions and ideas to help make this and all my products better. Please send me a message any time.
