Before jumping to 2022 I wanted to do a bigger project, a portable chess board that folds into a box for transport carrying all the pieces inside.
This one took 2 weeks to design, some iterations on the lock mechanism that delayed the release. I originally wanted to make a print in place lock system that, in my tests I was not satisfied, they were fragile breaking all the time and very susceptive to printer tolerances. I still haven't given up on that goal, but for now I'm happy with a simpler solution, but still it work very well.
So, what is included in this "kit"?
- 1 Chess board, two halves, left side and right side;
- 1 square model, you will need to print 32 times in white and other 32 time in black (or maybe in other not so classic colors);
- A frame to the board, print it two times;
- And all the pieces of the board: pawn, rook, knight, bishop, queen, king. All of this were designed by me, but still a bit work in progress, will improve in the future, or maybe wait for your creations (wink face) ;
- A lock, that should be printed in TPU.
Special instruction for the hinges: I used a paper clip and glued in place. This makes the hinges strong and smaller than a 100% printed solution. You can also use a filament instead of a clip, since the hole size should allow a 1.75mm filament (I haven't tested this, no idea if its strong enough).
Print Settings:
Left and right side of the board: Use supports.
All other: don't need supports;
Resolution: 0.2
Infill: 15%
All models can be printed in PLA with the exception of the lock that should be TPU.
I hope you enjoy this and let me know if you had issues or if it works. I would appreciate to see your makes also, that really makes my day (happy face).
I wish you all a happy 2022.
