Bananas!

Bananas!

My new banana bowl design!

What if you cut off a whole segment of a bunch of Banans? It kind of looks like a bowl - so that is what I did! I 3d scanned a few of them and composed them into this beautiful and highly realistic statement piece bowl.

After the positive feedback on the Ananas this is the next design in my newly found tropical theme. More coming soon!

07.jpgProcess

I pre-selected the bananas in the supermarket for their growth direction to reduce modification for overhang optimization. I was once again the weird guy in the shop. The scanning process was a little messy. I had to slightly freeze the bananas and put them on a quickly crafted stick add-on onto my rotating scan table. Otherwise, they would either wobble around or I would miss out on one side. Scanning looks easy in the commercials of the hardware manufactures, but it is in fact a whole variety of skills necessary and a lot of time. Since I did not want to scan 20 Bananas – I did make slight changes to look more realistic. Fortunately, the clean-up of the scans was quick, and I could get into the assembly right away. The file size in blender was already at multiple gigabytes so this put a lot of pressure on my PC with several crashes and recoveries. In the end the polished export took longer than the sculpting process.

Printing

The thing is super easy to print and freely scalable. My current printers only allowed me to print is at 75% of what would be real-life size. I hope some of you with the big printers will show me pictures of a real-life sized print!

STL and 3MF files are included and work for all current multi color setups. I used Polymakers savanna yellow and wood brown. It looks almost too real.

have fun printing!
