DATUM - Caliper Crib 02 - Universal Caliper Dock
Description The DATUM Caliper Crib 02 provides a dedicated resting place for digital calipers, allowing them to sit in a natural, stable position between measurements.
~ Updated to Rev 02 with refined geometry and improved manufacturing results ~
This design was developed to support the geometry common to most digital calipers without confining the tool in a tight slot or pocket. Instead, a series of subtle datums guide the caliper into position while allowing it to be lifted out instantly with one hand. This approach keeps the caliper secure while avoiding interference with displays, buttons, or housings that vary significantly between manufacturers.
Universal Design Intent Digital calipers differ widely between manufacturers in terms of display housings, button locations, and body shapes. Some place buttons on the front, others underneath the display, and the slider bodies can vary quite a bit. However, nearly all calipers share two consistent features:
- The beam
- The fixed jaw
These two elements became the primary references used in this design. The beam rests across the rear support while the fixed jaw settles into the front cradle. These references locate the caliper consistently while leaving clearance for the various display housings and button placements seen across different brands. The geometry was evaluated using both Mitutoyo Digimatic and iGaging OriginCal digital calipers, which place their buttons in different locations. The design intentionally allows for these variations so the tool can sit naturally without interference. While no fixture can guarantee compatibility with every caliper ever produced, the geometry was developed around the features shared by the majority of digital calipers, effectively covering most common models.
Subtle Restraint Without Confinement Rather than trapping the caliper in a pocket, several geometric datums guide the tool into a stable resting position. Once seated, the caliper is restrained against:
- Forward movement
- Rearward movement
- Lateral movement
The only free direction is upward, allowing the tool to be lifted out easily when needed. This approach keeps the caliper stable while preserving quick one-handed access.
Jaw Tip Shroud A protective jaw tip shroud is integrated into the front cradle. This feature serves two purposes:
- Protects the delicate jaw tips
- Subtly captures the caliper once it is seated
With the caliper resting in the crib, the shroud helps prevent the tool from slipping out of position. This allows the entire stand to be moved to another location with the caliper still loaded without fear of the tool falling out.
Print Information Supports: Not required but you must enable, “Support critical regions only” in Bambu Studio or the equivalent setting in your slicer of choice. Even so, the supports are very minimal if you choose to enable them.
Typical settings: Layer height: 0.20–0.24 mm Walls: 3 Infill: 15% Material: PLA or PETG The model prints flat on the build plate and requires no special settings.
