This innovative wasp trap blends smart mechanical design with visual cues to attract and trap wasps more effectively. Designed to fit standard mason jars (both regular and wide mouth), this 100% 3D printed system features a twist-to-close iris mechanism that locks wasps inside the jar after entry — and allows for easy sealing and disposal or relocation.

Key features:

  • Large 80 mm funnel top for improved visibility and scent diffusion
  • Twist-to-close ring gear securely traps wasps once captured
  • Iris blades simulate leaves, increasing natural appeal and providing additional landing zones
  • Snap-together design – no screws, springs, or tools required
  • Includes collars for both regular and wide mouth mason jars
  • Optional blade styles included: leaf-patterned or plain
  • Fully 3D printable – optimized for PLA, PETG, or ASA

This version uses no chemicals and supports both dry or moist baiting, depending on your preference.

Color is Important

For optimal performance, print the funnel in bright yellow to visually attract wasps. Use green for the iris blades to simulate leaf shapes and provide contrast. The ring gear and collar are best printed in black or dark filament to hide the mechanical parts and give a clean finish. This color strategy not only improves trap visibility but mimics natural wasp foraging cues for greater effectiveness.

Bait Tips for Maximum Effectiveness:

For best results, use a protein-rich bait in early to mid-summer (June through July), when wasps are feeding their larvae. A small chunk of canned tuna, raw sausage, or wet cat food works well — moisten it slightly with water, and add a splash of vinegar to help deter bees. As the season shifts toward late summer and fall (August to September), wasps become more sugar-hungry. At that time, switch to a sweet bait like apple juice, fruit scraps, or soda (still with a drop of vinegar). Refresh bait every 2–3 days for best performance.

Suggested Bait Mix: 1 small chunk of raw meat, tuna or wet cat food for example (pea-sized or slightly larger) ½ tsp fish sauce or soy sauce ½ tsp water or apple juice (to help scent rise) ½–1 tsp vinegar (to deter bees)

What’s Included: Funnel with integrated collar mount Twist ring gear Two collars (for regular and wide-mouth mason jars) 4 iris blades (leaf-style) Optional plain blade variant

Best Practices for Wasp Trap Placement & Use

Use Clear Containers
Wasps are drawn to light. Choose clear PET bottles or glass mason jars to increase entry and reduce escape behavior.

Place in Sun, Not Wind
Position traps in warm, sunny areas near known wasp activity (like compost bins, fruit trees, or decks), but avoid windy spots — scent disperses better in still air.

Refresh Bait Every 2–3 Days
Especially in hot weather. Protein baits spoil quickly and lose effectiveness.

Raise to Wasp Level
Mount or hang the trap around table height or eye level for best interception — avoid placing it directly on the ground unless necessary.

Keep Away From Gathering Areas
Place traps 10–15 feet away from patios or eating spaces to draw wasps away, not in.

Close When Full Twist the iris shut to safely trap wasps inside for disposal or relocation.
