Reusable Filament Spool for Bambulab and new eSun (Bambulab compatible) Refills

This model is restricted by licensing terms.

This is version 2.0 of my previously released BambuLab-compatible reusable spool. I have made several improvements based on suggested improvements from users most notably PhilH. Thank you Phil.

The new features and improvements include:

  • tapered core for easier loading and unloading
  • improved internal geometry reduces print time and material
  • compliant indexing tab allows both halves to be identical
  • six filament anchoring holes for more convenient winding of filament
  • AMS and non-AMS versions (so you can print it with color text or single color)

The spool consists of two identical halves which you print and then mate by simply twisting them together. This new version has a compliant indexing nub which moves out of the way on one side and indexes the filament core on the other side. There is a detent to hold them in position but you can reverse twist them to separate the halves just as easily. They also can be nestable for storage

I have included a printable snap-on label card for marking what filament is in the spool. The card also has some slots so if you remove a partially used spool you can zip-tie the label to the partial spool before putting it in storage. The card can snap onto multiple locations and on either side of the spool.

Another feature I added which is out there but I did not like how it was done on the ones I looked at was the ability to add zip-ties to the partially used filament roll before removing it from the spool. I made the side slots for inserting the zap strap extend to inside the spool diameter, where there is a space for the strap to pass under the filament core. And, then I created offsetting additional space that allows the re-useable spool to be twisted and separated without interference with the now-installed zip-tie.

Lastly, I added more holes for inserting the end of the filament to tie it down. It always bothered me that some of the spools from the manufacturers have very few holes in the sides so you have to unspool some filament to reach the hole. Not a big deal… unless you are OCD. ugh.

100% printed - no hardware, fasteners, or adhesives required. No support is required.

Print Settings

For the best results, I suggest the following: Material = I recommend PLA or PETG but any material should work.
Nozzle = 0.4mm Layer Height = 0.2mm Line Width = 0.4mm Wall Count = 4 (1.6mm) Top and Bottom Layer Count = 5 Detect Thin Walls = ON Wall Generator = Arachne Infill = 40% (Cubic) Ironing = Not required Support = None required Print orientation = As per the STL/3MF files.

Revisions and Updates I occasionally update and revise my designs. When I do, I’ll document the changes here. Check back periodically for the latest revision notes or if you’re experiencing any issues with a model.

2025-05-11: I have revised the spool so that the previously radial filament anchoring holes are now parallel to the filament direction. I have made this change on the advice of someone else who explained this is appropriate. I welcome feedback. I have left the filament anchoring holes in the walls. I also added the label card which I had previously forgotten.

2025-12-20: I have made a few more improvements including this new version 2.03 has a much improved indexing nub.

Hi, Nice design, they are the best spools i have come across.

One request, can you enlarge the cable tie slots to accommodate 8mm versions. where i live only 8mm cable ties are available as reusable. It is a pity i have to trow away the normal smaller ones every time. Dont feel like printing them if i can just buy a bag of them a few cents/piece.

Thanks!

Are the cable ties you have 8mm wide and still quite thin (flat) or are they the beaded type with?

Apologies for a bit of a 'n00b' question, but will these spools work with "Esun PETG Re-filament" refills? In the product description, it said that they need the following:

Please note that this is a newly designed refill filament, which no longer fits the old reusable spool or eSun clear spool.

Example: https://cubictech.com.au/products/esun-espool-polycarbonate-3d-filament-spool

Thank you!

Yes, sounds like the newer format which this spool will fit. I also have the spool for the older format if needed.

Did you try adaptive layer height? According to Orca, that could save 15 minutes when printing one or 25 minutes when printing two at once.

Paul B

I haven’t but I will do you feel the strength of the finish part is good still?

Not yet, only a regular one. What's your experience, do the two halves stay together without a retainer clip like in the "official" bambu spool?

Paul B
logicalplanet

The two halves of the spool i designed definitely stay together. They use a rotated snap fit not a thread.

Great design, congrats. I just had a question about the indexing tabs. Is that required to be broken loose from its supports before use? It looks like it's supposed to swing freely on the non-notch side of the cardboard insert.

Paul B
logicalplanet

You can break it free or let it happen naturally as you use it (I hope). :-)

Hi! Also love the design, but the nub just broke away and now is not usable on this side of the spool. It looks like it should get out of the way and "swing" back, but sadly this is not the case (printed in ASA)

Can you send me a photo. I would like to resolve this.

Hi! Send it via your contact form on your homepage.

Has anyone found reusable zip ties that work with this? The ones I have found that are long enough are a bit to wide.

Paul B
logicalplanet

Oh great question. I think there may be some printable ones out there. If there are not I think I could design some.

R
Ralterma

There are some printable ones out there but none of them seem to have the length, smaller width to fit through and smaller head. These are REALLY close. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CNK6Y9DP/?coliid=I33P8KB3KV9S3G&colid=2TUANCF39RPO1&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it&th=1

Will these work in the Creality CFS?

Paul B
logicalplanet

Yes, for sure. I have a Creality K2 Plus and it works well.

I am using ultimaker cura and I don't know if I have to use any slicer tolerance do you have any idea if I have to use it?

Paul B
logicalplanet

I have sliced it in Cura and just used my regular settings. Nothing special is required. It is a pretty easy print.

When I open the 3mf file, Bambu Studio says it is not from Bambu and imports the geometry only, without the text.

Paul B

If you email me at logicalplanet3d Gmail.com I can send you a bambulab 3mf

James B

Thanks. Email sent.

Woow, what an engagement, a useful comment of 2 days ago is also incorporated into the model. Bravo!!

Paul B

haha, I try not to waste time. I say with a smile. Actually, I just did not want to have a bad design out there. Hopefully it is better now. If you try it please let me know. Thank you.

yes, about to send it to the printer. I need an AMS compatibility. You say in description (AMS and non-AMS versions), but I don't see where the difference is.

Paul B
logicalplanet

oh, yes, I might have not explained that well. There is an stl file that can print in a single color and has some text on it which will be reverse embossed (there is probably a word for that). And, then there is a 3mf file that has the same text but it can be printed in two colors so the text is easier to see. I run many types of printers and use several different spools so it is helpful for me to make the text more visible. Otherwise both spools are the same size and features.

Van Bernaert

reverse embossed = debossed :)

ha ok thx!! fully AMS ready then. Great, I push the print button here and keep you posted about that!

Thank you.

With all this attention, why would you repeat the obvious mistakes of others and not make the filament retention holes angled in the direction of the filament wind to allow a clean straight release at the end of filament? Wasn’t Bambu “tapegate” and the hard angled filament holes that led to it enough publicity? SMH.

Paul B
logicalplanet

I was not aware. I will add them.
