The Impossible Planetary Gear Fidget

This model is restricted by licensing terms.

This is a mix of the Impossible Gear Fidget and the Planetary Gear Demo. This fidget uses planetary gears, it’s a great way to better understand how they work.

Demonstration If you hold the carrier(middle gear) and turn the sun(top gear), you get at 3:1 speed reduction. This ratio is a result of the 36 teeth on the ring gear divided by the 12 teeth on planet gears. If you hold the ring(bottom gear) and turn the sun(top gear), you get a 1:4 speed reduction on the carrier(middle gear). The is because the much larger diameter ring gear is moving faster than the smaller sun gear. The equation works out to be the 36 teeth of the ring gear divided by the 12 teeth of the planet gear plus 1. If you hold the sun gear and spin the ring gear and the carrier, there is no reduction and it acts like a bearing

Awesome and easy! Prints in place
The Impossible Planetary Gear in Magic Dual Color PLA
Neptune 3 Pro, .15mm layer height, .4mm nozzle, works great :) Took around 10h-ish
Green is prusament lime green
Blue and black are hatchbox

Printed at .15 layer height on mk3s+
worked perfectly with silk filament .. no change from standard settings. had to force the gears a bit after printing but otherwise great work

Worked well at .15mm height, if you have issues with it sticking and breaking the gears off their axis, make sure the axis isn't stuck to the inside of the 4 outer gears. First print I did had the axis fused to the gears because I was over extruding and printing in too high of layer height. Now to see if I can scale it down without making a blob!

The mini version is on my list....

I found if the gears are stuck, instead of torqueing on them, I push on them axially.

Awesome model thank you. I did it full size on my P1P in 3h30 @0.2mm and it was perfect. Just doing three more at 80% scale and 0.15mm in 8h10.

Broke first try at 0.2mm layer height on ender 3 v2. Standard settings otherwise. all four planetary cogs broke off their axles on the first twist, didn't even force it that hard, An awesome model if you can get it to work though.

whoa, my slicer is saying 11 hours and 59 minutes to print on my Ultimaker 3. How long has it taken others?

Mine finished in 4hrs and 48 minutes at 0.2mm layer height with a 0.4mm nozzle on my Ankermake M5 at 500mm/s, everything is working perfectly

9 hours at 0.2mm layer height on a 0.4mm nozzle on my Prusa MK3. Not sure where the recommended settings are from this author?

They are a helper to keep the sun gear adhered to the bed, remove them after it prints.

have you tried other print in place parts? There are some smaller ones you could try first as a test print.

Can this be printed as is, or do i need to split it into parts?

P.S. I've just got my first 3D printer and i'm in awe! Keep up the good work, can't wait to see what else you come up with :)
