Bring your members and Discord together with the Thangs3D Discord Bot

Discord Membership Management is now available through the Thangs3D Discord Bot!

One of the most popular requests from designers we’ve heard since launching Thangs Memberships has been to have a way to seamlessly onboard new members to their Discord. Well, you asked and we delivered :) Today we’re pleased to share that Discord Membership Management is now available through the Thangs3D Discord Bot!

If you’re not familiar with Discord or are looking for a way to build a community around your Thangs Membership plans, you can learn more and get started with their guide here.

How to set up your Thangs3D Discord integration

Our goal when building the Thangs3D Discord Bot was to make member management woes a thing of the past, and we think you’re going to find that’s the case. Using Discord’s native role system, we’ve made our bot a natural extension of how many servers and bots already function, and to set it all up, it just takes 3 easy steps:

  1. Create your membership roles and install the Thangs3D Discord Bot
  2. Connect your Thangs account to your Discord Server
  3. Assign your Discord user roles to your Membership Plans

Now let’s get into the details.

Create your membership roles and install the Thangs3D Discord Bot

If you don’t have a server yet or want to learn more about how to set up a Discord server, the Discord team has a guide just for you!

Roles are a great way to give access to exclusive channels and permissions in Discord, so great in fact that it’s how our Discord bot helps manage your plan benefits in your server. If you have roles that you want to use already, great! If not, here’s how you can add them:

  1. Log in to Discord on the app or website
  2. Click into the server that you plan on linking to Thangs, and click on the drop-down button next to your server name
  3. Click on Server Settings
  4. Click the Roles tab
  5. Click the Create role button to create a new role
  6. Give your role the desired permissions and access to channels within your server
Want to have an even easier time managing your users? Here’s a pro tip!
If you’re creating new roles to use when linking your plans and Discord server, using the plan name for the role is a great way to make it clear who should have which roles and what benefits they should get!

Connect your Thangs account to your Discord Server

Now that your roles are there, it’s time to start building that bridge between your Thangs account and your Discord server.

  1. Log in to Thangs with the account that offers memberships
  2. Go to your settings, find the row labeled “Discord integration” under Monetization Settings, and click the “Connect” button to the right to open up Discord
  3. Once Discord is open, sign in if you need to, select the server you want to link to your Thangs account, and click “Continue”
  4. Be sure to not remove any of the pre-checked permissions, otherwise the bot won’t be able to give benefits to your members
  5. Click “Authorize” to add the bot to your server
  6. Once the bot is added, go back to your server settings and open the roles
  7. There will be a new “Thangs Bot” role there — feel free to rename it to “Thangs Discord Bot” or any other name to further distinguish it from your other roles
  8. Drag that role up your roles list so it’s above at least all of the roles you’ll be adding to your plans

This part of setup is the trickiest, so make sure that the following are true before you go to the next step otherwise the Discord bot won’t be able to manage roles for you:

  • The installed Thangs3D bot has the “Manage Roles” permission
List of permissions required by the Thangs3D Discord Bot in order for it to manage Thangs Membership users. The Permissions are: Manage Roles, Kick Members, and Create Invite.
  • The bot’s role (“Thangs Bot” or whatever you renamed it to) is above all roles that will be linked to your membership plans
Recording of user moving the Thangs Bot user role to be above all other roles

Assign your Discord user roles to your Membership Plans

You’re just a few minutes away from being done, and the hard part is out of the way, so let’s get straight to the last part of the set up: assigning roles to your plans.

  1. Navigate to either your Plans Overview page or your Monetization Settings
  2. Find a plan that you want to have Discord benefits and click Edit in the left-hand nav panel (or click the row if in Monetization Settings)
  3. At the bottom of the Edit Plan overlay, you’ll see a section titled “Discord” — click “Enable benefits”
  4. Open the role selector to the right of the “Enable benefits” checkbox and select the role or roles that you want linked to the plan
  5. Once you’re done, click save!
Having issues setting up your bot? We’re here to help! Try the following steps to fix your integration:
- Check the permissions for the bot in your Discord server and make sure it has Manage Roles, Kick Members, and Create Invite
-
Make sure that the Thangs Bot role is above all of the roles that it needs to manage — if it’s not above the roles, then it can’t assign them to your members
- If the above steps don’t work, you can disconnect and reconnect your server from your settings page
- And as always, you can reach out for help at support@thangs.com

That’s it, you’re all set up! The Thangs3D Discord bot will take it from here by adding and removing roles to and from your members automatically, all based on their membership status, the plan they’ve joined, and any changes you make to assignments from then on out. If you change your mind at any point and want to disconnect, just disconnect your server from your settings page and we’ll remove all the roles for you.
