CO2 Pool Torpedo and Launcher

This model is restricted by licensing terms.

Model This model consists of a three piece torpedo that houses a 16 g CO2 cartridge and ballast holder. The launcher is built with a few bits of hardware and is used to puncture the CO2 canister and launch the torpedo underwater. The torpedo won't harm anyone, but be cautious around the launcher (sharp object) and CO2 gas (high pressure and cold).

Update: I've also added alternative top and lower sections by request that are extended so that the torpedoes will float rather than sink (untested).

Check out the Build Video for assembly instructions and to see how they perform.

Print Settings

  • Print all parts in their original orientation.
  • Torpedo parts: 0.2 mm layer height, 40% infill, no supports (rely on bridging)
  • Torpedo - Ballast Holder: Print two of
  • Launcher - Housing: 0.2 mm layer height, 40% infill, supports (touching build plate and increase overhang angle to 80 degrees to avoid supports on outer threads, or use support blocker)
  • Launcher - Nail Holder: 0.1 mm layer height (smoother action), 40% infill, supports
  • Other launcher parts: 0.2 mm layer height, 40% infill, no supports Launcher - Spacers: Print if required to add preload to spring (two sizes to choose from)

Hardware Required

  • 16 gram disposable CO2 cartridges
  • 1 x M3 x 20 mm machine screw
  • 1 x M3 x 4 mm heatset insert
  • 1 x 12.7 mm x 38.1 mm x 1.041 mm compression spring (or similar diameter and use spacers)
  • 1 x 50 mm x 3.3 mm nail (concrete nails are good)
  • Fishing sinkers for ballast (or anything else that you can stuff in the nose cone)

The idea is great but the threads are way too thin. ABS breaks again and again.

I'm building this thing right now, and have come to the same conclusion. The threading design is absolutely horrible.

what 3d printer do you recomend?

When I got done printing everything the main problem I faced was that the cap for the launching mechanism would not go on it was to hard to get to fit and was not that smooth like the video showed. The second problem I had was that the sliding for the nail to go down was way to hard it ended up breaking so I had to print another. It still is really cool but those were two of the most annoying things. Overall great job I just wish it was a little easier to pull down.

The threading design is absolutely horrible. The middle part just breaks apart since they are way too thin, and the bottom cap does not fit over the body. Please upload a new STL with fixed threads.

It is great but can you use 12g ?

Sensational model! Can't wait to take it down to the local pool :)

I'm having the same problem as JP Letuillier below. The wall thickness of the threads on the "Middle Section" are so weak that they dont survive being dropped. Can you please upload a new model adding another 1mm of WT to the backing of the threaded sections?

Such a nice idea! Thanks.
