Dimensional Accuracy Test

By printing this part which is a stack of different diameters, you will be able to diagnose dimensional inaccuracy in every directions. Use a caliper to measure the dimensions of each cylinder and the height of each level.

If the inaccuracy scales with the size of the diameters, the cause is steps/mm of your steppers. (note: you may also want to adjust the flow, and maybe redo some calibrations if the change is important).

If it does not scale, you can correct it by adjusting your Horizontal Expansion.

By measuring the height of the cylinders you can also control the accuracy of your steppers in Z.

Hole Test

Test part to analyse the best hole offset to use in the conception of your parts.

Print the test part. With a Caliper controle the hole diameter. If you think these values are not correct, you can use the Hole Horizontal Expansion parameter to set the right offset on the holes. In this case we recommend to use the Calibration Cube XYZ or MultiCube test part to verify that the axis are well calibrated via the Horizontal Expansion.

Hole diameter:
1 mm ~ 15 mm

Retract Test

Print the part and check if you have some strings on your part. Si es asi, you could try to change the parameters to find the best settings to suppress this strings. The most important parameters you should check in your slicer to minimize the stringing are the following:

Temperature
Retraction distance
Retraction speed

Temperature is a vital factor and probably one of the 5 most important settings in your profile. If you have a lot of stringing you are almost certainly melting at too high a temperature. Remember that all materials have a range of temperatures in which they can be printed, so try lowering the temperature and bringing it closer to the lower limit recommended by the manufacturer. If you are already using a very low temperature and still have stringing, check the following points.

While it is not possible to “suck” plastic out of the nozzle, as no negative pressure can be created, it is possible to minimize the pressure on the nozzle by pulling the filament out of the hot zone of our hotend. The shrinkage distance is very dependent on our printer, as both the melter and extruder and the type of extrusion (direct or bowden) must be considered. Most bowden printers perform well with a shrinkage value between 3mm and 6mm, and direct extrusion printers between 0.5mm and 2mm.

The speed of retraction is another important factor, as the higher the speed the lower the stringing. This speed will depend on the motor of our extruder and also on the type of extrusion. Generally values between 40 mm/s and 60 mm/s usually work.

Overhang Test

Which cantilever can be 3D printed?
There is a general rule of thumb when it comes to 3D printing cantilevers. The angle of the overhang must not exceed 45°. This is to make sure that each successive layer has enough support. This also means that at 45° the 3D model prints well because each layer is in about 50% contact with the layer below.

But now comes the question, is your printer capable of printing more than 45° without dying in the attempt?

Performing an overhang test is a good way to find out what types of angles your printer can successfully create without using supports. This overhang test print has a series of increasing angles to show at what point the printer begins to have trouble. Results from this test will help determine the Max Overhang Angle used for support generation.

Tolerance Test

This test is very useful when you want to design hole and shaft to know what is the minimum clearance that our machine can print.

Just print the part and once you're done, try removing the shafts manually, the smallest measurement that can be removed will give you an idea of the minimum tolerance to which your machine can print a hole - shaft.
