Gridfinity Toolbox (Parametric)

Ever wished you could pack your gridfinitised workshop for some on-the-go action? Well this is a solution. I wouldn't call it the solution; its grossly overcomplicated, requires post processing, and has not been field tested at all. If you can look past these shortcomings, then enjoy!

The default configuration is 3x5 slots, and you can try different dimensions yourself: https://a360.co/3NkyOrE. The number of parts however, remains the same per "layer" regardless of your chosen dimensions.

Per Layer:

[1] PLATE [2] CLASP HOOK [4] CLASP ARM [6] Axle (3 mm S.Steel Rod) [70 mm length] in addition to this.

Per Toolbox:

[1] LID [1] HANDLE [2] Axle (3 mm S.Steel Rod) [50 mm length] [2] M4 Threaded Brass Insert [2] M4 Shoulder Bolt (10 mm Shoulder) (Alternatively a regular 15~20 mm Bolt if that's how you roll) The files provided are for the default configurations 030504 and 030506

The naming convention is as follows:

## ## - → Width of toolbox [integers] [ 02 < n < 10 ] ## → Length of toolbox [integers] [ 03 < n < 10 ] ## → Thickness of toolbox layers [integers] [ 03 < n < 06 ] ######## → Part name

Values left as ‘##’ signify that the part works for all variants of this dimension.

Note, I used the beefed up hinges in PNW_Prototyping's comment below, and I added small handles to the clasps. The clasps fit very snug over the metal rods, and I was having a **** of a time trying to get them open without the small grips. There's a remix of that clasp that has the grips already on them, but that one was way too loose (probably designed for a different rod), and would only keep the stuff closed if I was lifting the handle, and that's a disaster waiting to happen.

I love this thing, I've printed some more bins to change my parts around a little, and I definitely plan to expand on this concept.

The hinges were a little weak so I beefed them up a bit and made them slightly easier to print (still need support). You could probably do a better job, but this was my 5 minute contribution.

For the hinge pins I'm going to try 3x35mm screws, inserted at each end.

Couldn't figure out how to actually change the toolbox. Figured out you have to go to the link in description and use "Open with Fusion 360." Isn't parametric if you just download the files.

I will probably upload a couple sizes for people like me who don't have Fusion 360 (I'm using the 30 day trial).

Very helpful comment, thank you

Can you tell me where I can download suitable bins with a transparent back for this toolbox?

Ok, the files are just objects only. If you could provide the file type that you used from the program that made this (Like openSCAD, Fusion 360, Blender, etc) that will be needed to make this a parametric project instead of a download of what you see in the picture would be better. Like F3d, scad, blend, or FCStd for the most common ones used. An stl is nothing more than a solid object.

There's a link in the description, but Autodesk changed their pricing structure so its not available at the moment

Curious, back in July 3, 2022, Zack mentioned that the hinges holes print in the weakest orientation and need support. Have these issues been resolved?

R
RAmeeti

Apparently not. I printed this and the hinges on the plate have serious issues.

Hello, i modified this design so the hinges can be printed without support and are overall stronger. Would i be allowed to publish the design on Printables.com, under the same account name, so other people can use it?

This model is licensed CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, so you can remix it as long as you include credit to the creator of this one (jaswlodarczyk) and also release it under that license or a compatible one. If you do put it up on a different site, put a link here! I'm interested in your design, and I'm probably not the only one! :)

Awesome design - I'm printing various pieces right now - thank you!

Question - can't the 3-part latch be merged to a single piece? It'll be easier to assemble and will require less rods.

please tell me how the height of the project cells correlates with the height of gridfinity (1u -2u etc)
