šŸ’Š I wanted to make a traveling pill box that was just a bit more flexible. Meet the Nesting Pill Box! Print any number of days and snap them together to build out the most convenient collection for you. Heading out for the day? Need a discrete pillbox to bring to dinner? Easily detach a single box and slide it into a pocket, bag or purse. The print in place lid and hinge ensures everything is all in place. Print enough for an overnight trip, a week long adventure, or more!

šŸ“¦ Just enough space: With an internal volume of 32 mm x 22 mm x 10ish mm, the pillbox has enough room to comfortably fit a moderate pill regimen, while still being eminently pocketable.

šŸ–Øļø Print Settings: My prints were done on a a stock A1 mini using a .4mm nozzle and eSUN PLA+. Sliced using Orca Slicer, Normal (auto) supports, .2mm layer height, and no brim was required in my tests.

šŸ“š How to use: After the initial print, things may feel stiff. Open and close the lid multiple times and things should loosen up to be easy to enough to open with two hands while still remaining securely closed if dropped. If you have any trouble opening the lid, a second container can be attached and used as leverage. When connecting two containers, a sharp push should align the containers easily. When detaching containers, a gentle wiggle along with downward pressure on the left and upward pressure on the right should be enough to do the job!

šŸ”œ Further improvements: This is my first published 3d print, and I recognize that there are folks who are much more skilled than myself. Feedback is welcome, and if you’re inspired by this piece, I encourage you to remix it! I’d love to see what you come up with. Here are some minor shortcomings that I think someone with more experience in Fusion could probably improve.

  • The lid mechanism: It works and by my tests is reliable, but I’m confident there can be a more satisfying snap-fit design.
  • Supports: I’d love to see a design that can print without supports and can create a nicer finish on the lid. I imagine reworking the hinge mechanism and printing the box and the lid separately would be the way forward there.
  • Dovetail improvements: After 25+ iterations, I’m very happy with the easy that two boxes nest together with the dovetail, but I’m sure someone with greater experience could find a more reliable solution beyond the careful tapering and dimple technique I'm currently using.
  • Parametric: Wouldn’t it be nice to dial in exactly the size you wanted…?
