Ariel - PH03 - Truncated Octahedron
This polyhedron light sculpture is rooted in the truncated octahedron, an Archimedean solid formed from hexagonal and square faces. That mixture gives the object a distinct balance: the hexagonal faces provide broad structural fields, while the square faces create smaller points of concentrated visual brightness. The form reads as a star-like body, with projecting peaks and recessed transitions that make the sculpture feel both stable and active.
The surface language belongs to the Harmonia Mundi family. For this design, a vertex-connected, boundary-offset motif changes character across the truncated octahedron’s different face types. On the square faces, the pattern tightens into clear, bright centers. On the larger faces, it stretches into stepped triangular paths, layered ridges, and nested geometric lines. The motif becomes a different visual language because the seed form carries it through squares and hexagons at once.
That relationship between pattern and polyhedron is central to the piece. The motif does not feel pasted onto the object; it is carried by the geometry. Each face contributes to the whole, and the sculpture’s profile gives the repeated pattern a directional quality. From some angles, the body reads as a symmetrical star. From closer views, the stepped surface becomes a field of smaller geometric decisions.
Light activates these differences. It gathers strongly in the square modules, then moves outward through the denser surrounding relief. Raised lines brighten first, while deeper areas hold shadow. This creates a clear contrast between openness and density, making the structure easier to read without flattening the surface.
As a meditative sculptural object, the piece is calm but not simple. Its presence comes from symmetry, proportion, repeated geometry, and the way light moves through its layered body. It carries a sense of balance without making a claim beyond the object itself: a precise polyhedron light sculpture where mathematical structure, patterned relief, and quiet illumination meet in one composed form.
