Osiris is one of the most pivotal deities in ancient Egyptian mythology, serving as the lord of the underworld and the supreme judge of the dead. He is traditionally depicted as a mummified pharaoh with green or black skin—colors that represent the fertile silt of the Nile and the promise of rebirth—while holding the crook and flail as symbols of his divine authority. According to the Osiris myth, he was originally a benevolent king of Egypt who was murdered and dismembered by his jealous brother, Set. He was eventually resurrected through the magical efforts of his wife, Isis, and his sister, Nephthys, allowing him to posthumously conceive his son, Horus. As the first mummy, Osiris provided the mythological blueprint for Egyptian funerary rites, offering the hope of eternal life to all who could pass his judgment in the Hall of Ma'at.
