Make your own bagpipe chanter #JuneTunes! This model comes in 4 or 2 pieces to fit different printer sizes. I included STEP and STL files so you can edit dimensions as needed to fit your materials. The required materials on top of a 3D printer are as follows:

  • 2 O-Rings (7/16" x 5/8" x 3/32" or 3/8" x 9/16" x 3/32" depending on printer accuracy)
  • Practice bagpipe chanter reed or plastic straw (the chanter reed sounds much better, but I have had luck with plastic straws)
  • Optional: Heat-shrink tubing (for making a better-sounding reed out of the plastic straw)

Assembly:

  • Roll the two O-Rings into the slots where the top half of the chanter connects with the bottom half
  • The plastic straw reed can be made 2 different ways
  1. Bite the tip of a plastic straw until you have as small a slit at the opening as possible. Cut the edges off the end of the straw as seen in the example images
  2. Iron a plastic straw flat with a rag in-between the iron and straw. Cut the creased parts of the straw with scissors. Cover the straw in heat-shrink tubing as seen in the example images. This reed sounds much better than the other plastic straw reed.

The size of the opening at the tip of the reed and different lengths of the creased portion drastically change the sound so feel free to experiment!

I hope you find this helpful and thank you for looking at my submission!
