I have an umbrella which was a free gift from a charity mailing a long time ago. With care, it has served me well but the button to press to make it extend to its full length and expand sadly shattered. This is the best copy I can make of the original shape (by reassembling the collected pieces, which are too brittle to re-use) and I have added an extra solid inverted U-shape underneath, to help keep it in exactly the right place within the handle so that it is subject to less lateral stress. The first picture shows the replacement button, which is what you get. The second picture shows the top surface of it sticking through the hole for it in the hollow handle of the umbrella. The end of the extending metal column of the umbrella also fits into the handle, under the inverted U-shape I mentioned, and into a little cup at the end of the handle, where it is held in place by a screw through from the outside of the handle. I expect it was this screw becoming a little loose and letting things move out of line that caused the original button to start breaking up inside the handle.
