Retractable Cable Organizer | Automatic Cable Winder
Keep your desk clean and your cables organized with this Retractable Cable Organizer. Pull out the cable to the desired length, and when you're done, simply press the center button to automatically retract it back inside β¨
- Fully 3D printable β no metal parts or hardware required
- One-button automatic cable retraction
- Designed for cables up to 1 meter (3.3 ft) -π οΈ Ratchet and pawl locking mechanism
- 3D printable spiral spring
- π Size: 91 Γ 25 mm
β οΈ Cable Compatibility
- For the best results, use soft braided cables, such as Apple charging cables.
- Soft rubber cables may also work, but stiff cables are not recommended, as they may not retract reliably.
π Spiral Spring Material For reliable performance, print the spiral spring in:
- ABS
- ASA
- PA (Nylon)
- or another high-toughness material
PLA and PETG can work, but they gradually lose spring force due to creep and stress relaxation, reducing retraction performance over time.
π Why is it this size?
The organizer measures 91 Γ 25 mm because a 3D printed plastic spring requires a larger diameter than a metal spring to store enough energy for reliable retraction.
β οΈ Important
Please make sure you use both the correct spring material and a compatible cable. These two factors are essential for the organizer to work reliably
π Redesigned from the Ground Up
This model is a complete redesign of my original Retractable Cable Organizer, first released on October 31, 2024.
While the original concept worked, it had several shortcomings. The spiral spring was too weak for consistent retraction, the mechanism wasn't always reliable, and the overall design was unnecessarily complex. It used a dual-layer cable spool, an additional hinge, required support material, and featured a ratchet mechanism that didn't always perform consistently. As a result, the model didn't work reliably for every user.
For this new version, I redesigned the mechanism from scratch. The construction has been greatly simplified, the hinge and support structures have been completely removed, and the retraction mechanism has been significantly improved. I also spent considerable time testing different spring designs, materials, and cable types to make the organizer as reliable as possible.
The result is a cleaner, easier-to-print, and far more dependable design that delivers a much better overall user experience. π
