Move over boat, there is a new benchmark in town.

This robot is not only a fun print-in-place figure but it is also a very useful calibration tool.

The robot is designed with 17 functional joints with different orientations, couplings, and tolerances. The tolerances range from 0.2 - 0.5mm and allow you to test the minimum clearances your printer can produce and still achieve print-in-place movement.

Each limb is labeled with the tolerances of their joints and all other joints have a 0.3mm tolerance. It might take a little (just a little) bit of force to break them free any more and you risk breaking the robot.

It only uses 20g of filament and is small enough to fit on a Prusa mini or even a Voron V0.

To add to the #MakerMadness theme I have added some accessory, because what says "spring" more than a robot wearing sunglasses and holding a flower 😁.

Print Settings:

No support! No brim!

The point of the Benchmark Bot is to find the best parameters to make it function, therefore it is difficult to recommend any settings.

That being said, I used the following parameters: 0.4mm nozzle, 0.2mm layer height, PLA, 3 walls, 4 top/bottom layers, 10% infill.

Came out grate after a little bed temp tweaking.

First try with suggested settings on an Ender 3 Pro. All joints work. One hip joint was tight, but then broke free and works fine. This is a great model. Thank you for sharing it. I'm printing the accessories now :-)
My son looooves it, already started number 2!
Weakest are the little gear on the back, one already popped off but it's fine anyway.

Really cool design but the vertical 0.2 tolarance in the hip frustrates me to almost no end. I tried making this as a toy for my son but I just keep collecting one legged robots. :(

The robot is pretty cool, but I got pretty frustrated trying to print. Every time I would it would fail in a different place. I got a couple that came out ok. Looking forward to more bots!

Thanks! I completely understand the frustration 😅, prototyping this guy was pretty difficult. This has been one of my favorite designs, and the added bonus is when the print fails the robot is still performing its function 😂.

You are super welcome!

Very cool design. My .2s are all stuck, the tinkering continues. This is a lot of fun. I would love a .4 or .5 bot, my nephews would enjoy this as a toy.

Thank you, I am glad you appreciate it. I am thinking about making one with the same tolerances for all of the joints. Check back for updates 😃.

floor/roof? what slicer do u use?...

for some reason I cant reply to below comment. I thought floor/roof is when support is enabled and this model doesnt require it. I use Cura latest and I did print out a perfect copy

Sorry for the confusion, I meant to say top/bottom layers.

Really cool design! It would be cool to see standard clearance version too. And nothing says spring more than robots. 🤣

Thanks! I will definitely make some mods in the near future.
