Full Size Anatomically-Correct 18-Piece Magnetic Human Skull Model

This human skull model can be used for learning anatomy or just freaking out your friends. See here for assembly video: https://youtu.be/dm0RT-1eFFc To assemble with magnets, you will need: • 66 of 1/8” x 1/16” cylindrical • 36 of 1/4” x 1/8” cylindrical www.kjmagnetics.com is a good source of magnets. Files are provided in anatomical orientation. You will need to reorient and prepare them according to your preferences, equipment, and skill level. Here are some considerations: • Orient outer surfaces upwards so that the surfaces in contact with support structures are less visible in the final model. • As much as possible, avoid orienting the magnetic anchors downwards. There are some situations in which this is unavoidable. These can be cleaned up post-print. Here are considerations for assembly: • Before inserting magnets, clean out the magnet anchors with a 1/8” or 1/4” drill bit to remove any imperfections, allowing the magnets to sit properly. • Ensure that you insert magnets with polarity oriented to allow proper connection of bones. • You may need to use glue to secure some of the magnets in place. CA glue works well. Every attempt has been made to maintain anatomical correctness; however, the following small modifications were necessary to optimize the files for 3D printing: • The nasal bones, lacrimal bones and upper teeth are fused to ipsilateral maxilla. Lower teeth are fused to the mandible. They are too small and thin to print and assemble on their own. • Some areas of bone have been thickened to support the magnet anchors. • Gaps have been created or expended between fused joints to allow these bones to be separated. • The perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone has been removed. It is too thin and there is limited space for it to fit properly. • Bones of the inner ear are not included. • This model includes only bony structures. Excellent model, the missing magnet cup on the Right Parietal Bone does not make any notable difference in the strength. Printed on a Bambu P1P, 0.4mm nozzle using 0.16mm Optimal settings in Orca slicer. 10% gyroid infill with tree supports used ~500g of MH Build series PLA in Bone White. Total print time was ~ 22h with 21mm^3 max vol. flowrate.

During assembly I found that the large magnet pockets could fit two 6x2mm magnets stacked, and the small could fit a 3x1.5mm magnet. If I did it again I'd order 6x4mm magnets for the larger pockets. All were sourced from Amazon, no issues with holding power.

Skull was made in eSUN PLA+ Bone White at 0.2mm layer height and 15% infill. I added my own glasses holders in the lime green.

To answers the questions in my other comment:
1. YES. The magnets feel plenty strong for the headband and even for shaking the skull somewhat hard. I didn't print this solid, so it's still pretty light weight, but heavier prints would likely still hold as the recommended magnets at N52 are really strong.

2. Clearly yes as you can see in the image. The gap between the pterygoid plate and foramen magnum the stand goes through is plenty big.
complete and on display. Printed in Hatchbox Stone Granite PLA
missing anchor point on right parietal bone in STL

Dave, im gonna need you to stop making stuff. I just went through EVERYTHING you have posted and I think im gonna end up breaking my printers.

If I use N52 magnets (from KJ), would this be strong enough to hold a headband around it?

I'm also thinking of printing a mount that can allow glasses to sit on this at night. It looks like I can design something through the base of the skull, just under the sphenoid, mounting with the lateral pterygoid plate and the back of the zygomatic arch. However, I can't tell if the stand this model has would allow that. Is there enough room for a small part to fit around the stand and pterygoid plates?

Finished printing this and the answer to both of these questions is yes.

The model calls for 38 bigger magnets! Don’t make the same mistake as me and order insufficient amount.
