Chain Link Klein Bottle

This model uses chain link latticing to represent a three-dimensional approximation of the four-dimensional “Klein Bottle.”

The concept of a Klein bottle was first described in 1882 by the German mathematician Felix Klein. It is a closed non-orientable surface that has no inside or outside. It is similar to the Möbius strip, but unlike the Möbius strip it has no boundaries and cannot physically exist in three-dimensional space.

In this three-dimensional representation, the surface intersects with itself, but in four-dimensional space the self-intersection can be eliminated. Unfortunately, I don’t have a 4D printer yet.

Modelling this intriguing shape in chain link latticing allows for visualization of the whole surface.

Reticular Form 3

This piece is part of a series of curious-looking vases inspired by the forms of “reticular” structures in the brain and elsewhere.

“Reticular” forms are characterized by a fine network or netlike structure. The most common anatomical example is the reticular formation in the brain, one of the oldest parts of the brain that plays a crucial role in consciousness.

When designing these pieces, I imagined what it would be like to inhabit and move around inside of these shapes. 

To add a dash of function, the forms have a hole at the top that can be used to hold your favourite organic plant material. The 26mm diameter hole will also hold a 1” test tube or similar container for water.

This piece is part of a set of two large slabs constructed from different varieties of triply periodic minimal surfaces.

The slabs are 3 x 3 x 2 cubes of unit cells, with the central top cell removed to allow placement of a square vase or other similar type of container. Three different  heights of square containers are included.

The footprint of each is approximately 100mm x 100mm.
