Between 1962 and 1998 the Distillers Company leased a fleet of 84 4-wheeled liquified gas tankers from Storage and Tanker Services (STS) in order to supply Carbon Dioxide (CO2), a by-product of alcohol production, to industrial customers across the UK. As the fleet grew these wagons also carried CO2 from ICI's Haverton Hill and Severn Beach works.

There were three basic designs (with sub-variants) and most were also modified during service. The first batch, 53200-53218, was produced by Motherwell Bridge & Engineering in Scotland to Diagram TTO18 (1962 - 1968).
