In the summer of 2025, I spoke at the Bridges Math Art Conference. It's a wonderfully nerdy gathering where mathematics and programming meet art. :D While there, I was inspired by Marijana Paunović’s work _Optical 3D Morphosis_, which used raised pyramids to reveal shifting images depending on your viewing angle. That sparked an idea: what if I designed a bag that changes colour depending on how you look at it?

At the time, I was collaborating with Snapmaker on their new U1 3D printer, which supports multi-TPU printing. To push the printer’s capabilities, I created this East-West bag in just seven days, complete with colour-shifting panels and, for the first time in my work, a fully functional 3D-printed zipper woven directly into the design (a derivative of [LoboCNC’s model on Printables](https://www.printables.com/model/504587-print-in-place-zipper)).

This is a model for a 3D printed bracer on mesh. It has two 3mf files with different methods you can use to make these. There are 4 sizes - Small and Large, with two variations of each, Short and Long. A 256x256 build plate is needed for these prints unless you intend to scale them down. 

Directions: You will need a couple of jump rings, a small length of chain (1"-4" / 25mm-100mm) and two lobster style clasps. Once the print is complete, trim away the excess fabric with a rotary blade or scissors. Add your desired length of chain that can attach to a 3D printed ring, if no other rings are available for the clasp to attach to (There are included ring sizes you can 3D print that have holes at the top). I used approximately 36" of stretch lace and connected the two ends together with a closure and jump ring. Length of lacing may vary depending on your forearm circumference and size chosen. I like using a small piece of high grit sand paper to smooth out the top surface that will be touching the skin, but you can also turn ironing on your top layers, or sew on a lining underneath it for added comfort.

The small size is recommended for those that have a mid forearm circumference of less than 10", while the large size is recommended for those that have a mid forearm circumference of greater than 10".

There is one 3mf that has 4 different sizes of a square grid pattern and attachments on the side and the top.

There is another 3mf that has the attachments in place, ready for a blank textile and bracer modifier to be added to customize your bracer. See the included PDF guide "How to use the bracer negative modifiers and the bracer attachments". 

The STL files are included as well. There should be a pause added at layer 2 where you will add the mesh of your choice. The total height of the model is 1.44mm, or 6 layers at a .24mm layer height.

Please reference the "How to customize your 3D textile with an SVG or STL" PDF that is included with this model, in addition to the "Printing on Fabric V2" PDF for some basic fabric instructions that can add customization to your prints. The photos demonstrate some examples of these bracers with different images modified into them.

Base.stl

I've wanted to create a multi-color, multi-part TPU bag for a while. I wanted to create a bag that was easy to print and easy to put together, with limited additional hardware required. You will need some adhesive to bond the TPU pieces together - I find E6000 to be very effective. This bag was designed to be printed on a Snapmaker U1 and requires a minimum build plate size of 270mm x 270mm. I have everything laid out in Orca Slicer with a Snapmaker modifier pattern, but it is not limited to this design as seen in the attached videos. You can also load in the individual STL files to your slicer of choosing.

The exterior pieces are intended to be printed with TPU at a .2mm layer height. There are pieces for the interior that are intended to be printed in PLA at a .2mm layer height. I used Holographic P-Flat sheets found at www.kaizen3dprints.com, but a textured build plate gives an awesome effect, too. I use Isopropyl alcohol to aid in the removal from the build plates.

You can either assemble the bag first and attach the panels after, or you can attach the panels first and then put the bag together. I use the same adhesive to apply the PLA panels to the interior of the bag.  There are registration points around the borders of the TPU pieces that will align the base, top, and sides together. I use alligator clips to  ensure good contact while the adhesive cures. The top of the bag will slide behind the front of the bag for closure. There is a small indentation in the front of the bag to allow easy opening. Attach a strap of your choosing, and enjoy!
