Inspired by rivet-joined steel ships, this oversized 3D-printed vest was originally designed as a jacket—sleeves pending! With three functional pockets, a structured yet flexible fit, and modular assembly, it’s a true blend of engineering and fashion. Designed for an EU 38, but thanks to its construction, it comfortably fits up to EU 44 as well. Assembly: 🧩🧩🧩🧩 (Challenge Accepted)

Printing & Material Details 📐 Required Build volume: 300x300cm

  • Filament: On the picture I've used Fiberlogy Black MattFlex 40D at 60% line infill for the main structure, 100% infill for bell modules. 40D TPU gives the perfect leather-like flexibility.
  • Bridges & Bells: I used 40D TPU (grey) and later experimented with 64D TPU (lilac), but I don’t recommend stiffer filament—it’s less comfortable on the inside. Printed in batches of 100 bells however many times needed, I stopped counting after a while. ;) Table.stl needs to be printed about 25x, the trio.stl only 4x.

Naming Logic for the 3D Models To help you assemble your vest (and future me make sense of my own system 🤦‍♀️), here’s the key to the naming structure:

B_.. → Back panels B_D. → Back panels with Details B_S. → Back panels (side, underarm) B_T. → Top of the back (shoulder area) Co_. → Collar F_.. → Front panels F_S. → Front side panels (underarm) P_.. → Lower pockets PT_.. → Top pocket (there’s only one) .M_.. → Mirrored version of a part C2_. → Clasp at the bottom sides H_. → Hooks to secure the clasp

Fit & Adjustability Oversized fit: EU 36-44

Customisation options: Print in black & grey for a timeless look, white & cream for an elegant look, or go crazy! Try holographic build plates for the pins/bells—they’ll be visible on the collar and jacket interior, adding a hidden design detail.

Sustainability & Modular Design

  • Flexible & repairable: Swap out damaged pieces instead of replacing the whole vest.
  • Minimal waste design: TPU parts reduce material waste while maintaining durability.

I’d love to see your prints! Tag me @variableseams or send photos—I’m always excited to see your versions and styling ideas!
