This cute little fellow was drawn in the margins of <i>De ludo scacchorum, tabularum et marellarum</i> by Nicolai de Nicolai which is a Chess, Backgammon, and Nine man's Morris strategy guide written sometime between 1302 and 1310. You can find the exact page here and if you can read medieval French there is a section discussing the morality of Chess added to the end of the manuscript.
