Gear Star
Hey, this is another variation of the Gear Sphere Mechanism by me. It is actually a Rhombic Dodecahedron. I made this more out of mathematical curiosity. If you watch closely, you can see that it consists of a Cube and an Octahedron, which means it transforms into a compound. The Gear Cube does the same thing. I did also make a motorized Desk Skulpture like this.
You will need: 6 Big Gear 1 4 Small Gear 2 4 Small Gear 3 1 Heart 14 Connectors
You can also just print out the "All" file; it contains everything you need.
Print Settings: Use a brim if you like. I used one only for the gears.
Assembly: You can just watch this video: https://youtu.be/TF81TunrQ4Y Push the connectors into the heart. Then push the Big Gears onto the faces that have the number 1. Then push all Small Gears 2 onto the faces with the number 2. Same with Small Gear 3. You then need to turn the gears until the edges align everywhere.
Troubleshooting: If your gears are too loose or too tight, watch this video: https://youtu.be/PWUoJc_Gc84
If your connectors break, try experimenting with how many walls you print. I usually print 2 walls, but try different amounts to see if it gets better. You can also try to print them with another spool or even another plastic. PETG works quite well.
Technical Data: The Gear Star takes around 100g of filament and 5.5 hours to print.
The filament I used in the pictures is: Protopasta Forest Fantasy Green.

Super clean print! Can you share you settings or post-print process?
I used the 0.16 High Quality preset in the Bambu Studio. I used iSANMATE PLA+ Rainbow Filament which I've been very happy with. It looks like they have a brighter version of the matte rainbow available now. I also scaled the print up to 150%.
This is an awesome tip and it made my prints look awesome. (Thanks, Bambu!) If anyone in the future comes here though, make sure Supports are turned off. I just had some fun with that one 😂 (Brim is okay, per the print instructions)
Wow that's a clean print!
TY!
For future users, the 'gear 2.0 all' file is missing one 'small gear 2' and one 'small gear 3'. its a wonderful print but you need to add those two small gears to the 'all' file.
when i print just the connecters they are not the right ones for this gear ball.. they are to short.. but when i print the all file they are correct. so the all file is great but i don't like printing them all together because of the brim on the connecters is a pain to get off.
replacement connector file received and all works well. Thanks Ruvenbals for the support
I used PLA/PHA from ColorFabb, its more flexible but firm as PLA and does not snap break as PLA normaly does.
