VERTICAL KIBBLE DISPENSER
A stylish way to your dog's daily feeding faster, cleaner, and more enjoyable.
The vertical kibble dispenser is a compact countertop dispenser designed for small and medium-sized dogs. Fill it from the top, turn the side wheel, and kibble is dispensed directly into the included collection tray, ready to be poured into your dog's bowl.
Unlike many printable kibble dispensers, this design was developed through multiple iterations to solve one common problem: jamming. Dry kibble comes in irregular shapes and often has a slightly oily surface, causing many dispensing mechanisms to clog. After testing several concepts, we developed a simple gear-driven mechanism that feeds kibble smoothly and reliably.
With its clean vertical design, the dispenser looks great on a kitchen counter instead of being hidden away in a cupboard. It holds approximately 750 grams of dry kibble (depending on kibble size), making it ideal for everyday feeding of small dogs.

HOW MECHANISM WORKS:

To convert the horizontal rotary motion of the hand-cranked drive wheel into the rotary motion of the angled conveyor wheel, we used a 1:1 gear made up of two spur wheels. This lets the conveyor wheel freely scoop kibble from a gravity-fed supply and carry it up to the highest point of its rotation, where an opening with a discharge chute sits beneath the wheel. A tray slides in under the chute outlet, and the pellets drop into it.

The drive wheel turns clockwise. In this direction, the drive wheel's thread tightens onto the transmission spur gear, while the thread on the driven conveyor wheel tightens in the opposite, counter-clockwise direction. Turning the drive wheel counter-clockwise would sooner or later loosen the thread on the drive shaft.

This free-scooping principle is used wherever the geometry of the picked-up particles is complex – coin sorters, for example. Our earlier attempts, built around helical (screw) conveyors, kept failing on exactly this point: the kibble would occasionally jam.

When testing our models (which include moving mechanical parts) we're especially hard on the mechanical reliability of the design, and on ourselves. We weren't satisfied with "it more or less works." We wanted a solution that works every time, no compromises, and feels effortless to the user – not just with round kibble, but also with the pillow-shaped kind, where we'd pinpointed probably the greatest jamming potential.
