These coasters highlight the beauty of the C3 axes of symmetry of the cubic unit cell of four types of minimal surfaces: Schoen’s Batwing Surface, Fischer-Koch C(Y), Fischer-Koch S, and Schoen’s Gyroid Surface. They can also be used to protect your table tops from coffee rings. See here for video: https://youtu.be/90y-FVOTjeE A minimal surface can be thought of as a surface that is stretched as tightly as possible within the edges that hold it in place. The shape of a soap bubble that forms within a wire frame is an example of a minimal surface. These coasters are derived from a special kind of minimal surface known as a “triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS),” a minimal surface that can be tiled infinitely in all three directions. These files are best printed without supports. There are areas of overhang and bridging in which you will get small areas of print failure on the bottom, but it is generally easier to just clean these up afterward than worry about supports. You will want to have your printer well calibrated for bridging.
