This “Wormhole Chess Board” is composed of two back-to-back regular sized chess boards connected by a catenoid surface through the central 4 x 4 grid of squares on each board.

Actual game play on this board is beyond challenging so unless you’re a genius, this board is more of an art or conversation piece.

Part of what makes game play so challenging is the presence of the eight pentagons that are required to transition between the flat and curved surfaces. 

Here are a few suggestions if you want to try playing. 

Moving a piece through a pentagon allows for additional movement options. When entering from a column or row on the flat surface (such as with a rook) there are two exit options, one that allows the piece to remain on the flat surface and another that allows the piece to enter the wormhole. The reverse is true when entering a pentagon from the wormhole. When entering a pentagon from a diagonal (such as with a bishop) there are two options for exiting the pentagon, both of which allow the piece to remain on its own colour. 

Because this piece is essentially two chess boards, there are four possible ends from which to start your pieces. 

For a two-player game, each player could use a single set or pieces each and leave two ends empty. Alternatively, each player could have two sets of pieces facing each other across the flat surface as well as through the catenoid surface. This means that there would be two kings, which would complicate the end game somewhat!

Another option would be to play as a four-player game with each set of pieces a different colour.

If anyone comes up with a comprehensive set of rules for incorporating the pentagons into game play, please share them! 

Here are printing and assembly instructions:

For the board, print two of each of the “Flat Board Half” and “Wormhole Half” files. No supports needed. Glue together carefully.

For the squares, you will need a total of 4 “Quadrant of Squares” for each colour. Note that there are small reference dimples on the bottom of the curved pieces. When properly positioned, the dimples will point towards the pentagonal piece.

Two standard sets of playing pieces are included, each with holes for 1/8” by 1/8” magnets. The larger size looks better, but pieces may collide when passing through the wormhole. Pieces in the smaller set won’t collide while passing through the wormhole.

You will need a total of 208 1/8” cylindrical magnets, one for each board piece and each playing piece (assuming you’re using two full sets of playing pieces). This model uses 1/8” length magnets, but 1/16” length would probably work fine. 

Insert the magnets into the square tiles before gluing them on to the frame. Make sure you get the polarity right so that all the pieces stick to all the squares! The magnets used in the design and assembly of this model were purchased through www.kjmagnetics.com. 

Once you’ve inserted the magnets and determined the correct orientation of each piece, go ahead and glue them in place. CA glue works well.

  I split it up for easer support removal but the full model is there too if  you want they are already scaled for gameplay

I recommend printing these on a resin printer, but if you don't mind a lot of finicky sanding you should be able to get a decent looking result off of a fdm printer

feel free to remix and make more weapons and stuff for it

These marble textured chess pieces are standardized sizes as defined by the FIDE, the Fédération Internationale des Échecs or International Chess Federation.

The model shown in the video is printed in “copy mode” on a Snapmaker J1 IDEX printer with both colours printing at once!

Multiples of each piece are provided so that each piece within a set can have a distinct marble pattern (i.e. there are two each of the rook, knight and bishop pieces and eight each of the pawn pieces.) 

The king and knights are provided with or without built in supports for the overhanging sections.

Game play remains the same but instead of moving in straight lines, pieces move in arcs across the surface of the sphere. 

Magnets are required to hold the pieces in place unless you are playing in a non-Euclidean universe.

The “Spherical Chess Board Frame” is provided with and without supports. The version with supports provides extra stability around the base of the pillars when printing. You will still need to add your preferred support for the rest of the structure, but you’ll need less of it. 

You will need a total of four “Tile Quadrants,” two of each colour. 

A standard set of playing pieces is included with holes for 1/8” by 1/8” magnets. 

You will need a total of 96 1/8” by 1/8” magnets, one for each square and one for each piece. Insert the magnets into the square tiles before gluing them on to the frame. The magnets used in the design and assembly of this model were purchased through www.kjmagnetics.com. 

Proper positioning of the “square” tiles on the board framework is the most challenging part of assembly. There are a few pieces that have very subtle differences in curves and edge lengths, and it is easy to put them in incorrectly. To make this easier, small dimples have been added to the bottoms of each “square” tile. There is a single dimple on the uppermost corner of every tile to ensure proper orientation. There is a single dimple on the outer chamfer of the four inner “squares,” and two dimples on the outer chamfer of the outer twelve “squares.” Refer to the picture provided.

Arrange the piece first, do a dry fit to make sure you’ve got it right, then use glue to attach the tiles to the framework. CA glue works well.

The magnet holes on the pieces and tiles are designed for a tight fit and shouldn’t need glue. Make sure you get the polarity right so that all the pieces stick to all the squares!


Spherical Chess Board

This is a musical instruments chess set.

It includes pieces, a gift box and a chess board.

The instruments are: xylophone, harp, guitar, french horn and drum and the pawns are two quavers.

The gift box comes in two sizes the double height will hold both sets of pieces. 

The board is printed in two pieces (one in each colour) and can be slotted together without glue.

Music Chess Set

This print-in-place chess set prints with board and all 32 pieces in a single print.

The pieces are separate objects but are held captive within the board and move along notches during game play. Because the pieces are held captive, the board could be used as a travel chess set.

Use paint to darken the appropriate square and pieces. The pieces can be removed and reinserted by pushing against the back of the board to splay the notches apart.

The board is 204.2 mm square. The bottom is thin to reduce material, so you’ll need to monitor the first layer closely and restart if there are any errors. The build plate needs to be perfectly level and calibrated.

Files include the full board and pieces, separate pieces in case you need to replace any, and a board structure without pieces if you want to add your own.


Print-in-Place Chess Set with Captive Pieces

Game play remains the same but instead of moving in straight lines, pieces move in arcs across the negative Gaussian curvature of a hyperbolic paraboloid. Also, the board rocks back and forth, which might be a bit distracting!

Magnets are required to hold the pieces in place unless you are playing in a non-Euclidean universe.  

For the board, print two of the “Hyperbolic Paraboloid Half Board” files. You won’t need supports, but brim is recommended. Glue the bottom edges together.

Before printing the squares, decide if you want the board to be oriented so that players face each other from “hilltops” across a valley, or from “valleys” up over a ridge. The board needs to be oriented such that each player has a white square in the lower right corner. 

The files provided here are named for the “Hill to Hill” orientation, as if your white pieces are on the hill closest to you facing black across the board on the opposite hill. When printing out the quadrants, it is important to not let them get mixed up or it will be next to impossible to sort them out again. 

You will need to print out one copy of each of the “Quadrant” file for each half of the board. Combine the “Hill to Hill Left Quadrant White” with the “Hill to Hill Left Quadrant Black” and arrange them according to the reference dimples described below. Print “Hill to Hill Right Quadrant White” and “Hill to Hill Right Quadrant Black” and combine them in the same way. Do this for both sides of the board.

Arrange the pieces first and inspect the contours of the top of each piece to ensure that the directions of concavity and convexity makes sense according the where the piece is on the board.

You will need a total of 96 1/8” by 1/8” magnets, one for each square and one for each piece. Insert the magnets into the square tiles before gluing them on to the frame. Hyperbolic Paraboloid Chess Board

This is a set of chess pieces originally designed by Herman Ohme in 1953. Models were made with the most careful reproduction of the original design and taking into account the easiness of printing. The height of the tallest figure (king) is 11 cm.

The hardest part to print is under the knight's jaw. It should print effortlessly, but slowing down bridge's speed to 10 mm/s is recommended.

The tip of the king also should be printed very slowly to avoid unwanted deformations.

A thicker shell at the bottom is recommended for better stability.

You can avoid this by slowing down your print speed or printing more than one at a time to allow time for the filament to solidify between layers.

Introducing the Dicey Destroyer Tile! When the trigger gets activated, roll a six-sided die and destroy the tile adjacent to the number that was rolled. If the space that was next to the number is empty, destroy the dicey destroyer tile that was activated. 

THIS IS A BETA VERSION. For some reason, I made it so that the tile can only be oriented in one way, which I will change for the next update. Also, I will make the zig-zagged circle more visible as well, and put the star in the center.

I designed these Catan game piece holders to be the exact size of a normal Catan hex (from my Catan Fifth Edition). They have slots in the bottom for 6mm x 2mm magnets so that they can be connected to each other (I personally used Neodymium magnets and they work well, I also superglued them in). I have made piece holders for base Catan, Seafarers, Cities & Knights, Traders & Barbarians, and Explorers & Pirates. I do plan on making holders for some of the scenarios, stories, and promos, eventually.

It features a hole to pass a string into and use the piece as a charm and thicker legs, as in the original piece they kept breaking.
