Diamond Chair – Sculpture in Steel

Designed in 1952 by Harry Bertoia, the Diamond Chair is one of the most celebrated works of mid-century modern furniture design. Created as part of Bertoia’s wire collection, the chair transforms industrial steel rods into an elegant, airy seating form. Its distinctive diamond-shaped silhouette gives the chair its name and defines its sculptural presence.

Produced by Knoll, the chair demonstrates Bertoia’s philosophy that furniture could function as both practical object and fine art. The welded steel grid forms a lightweight yet structurally strong shell that flexes slightly for comfort. Optional seat cushions add softness without compromising the chair’s open and transparent character.

Today, the Diamond Chair remains an icon of modern design. Its combination of geometry, craftsmanship, and material innovation allows it to complement contemporary interiors as effortlessly as it did in the 1950s. Whether displayed in full scale or recreated as a detailed 1:12 miniature model, the Diamond Chair continues to embody Bertoia’s vision of “sculpture made functional.”

Harry Bertoia:

Harry Bertoia was an Italian-American artist, sculptor, and furniture designer best known for transforming industrial materials into works of art. Born in 1915 in San Lorenzo, Italy, he immigrated to the United States as a teenager and later studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. There, he connected with leading modernist designers and developed a deep understanding of metalwork, craftsmanship, and experimental form.

Bertoia achieved international recognition through his collaboration with Knoll in the early 1950s. His iconic Bertoia wire chairs redefined furniture design by turning welded steel rods into airy, sculptural seating. Rather than concealing structure, he celebrated it—creating pieces that appeared delicate yet were remarkably strong and functional. The Diamond Chair, in particular, became a symbol of mid-century modern elegance.

Beyond furniture, Bertoia considered himself primarily a sculptor. He created expressive metal sculptures and his famous “Sonambient” sound sculptures, which produced resonant tones when touched or moved. Throughout his career, Bertoia blurred the boundaries between art, design, and architecture, leaving behind a legacy of innovation that continues to influence contemporary designers and artists alike.
