The Machine for Rest: LC4 Chaise Lounge
The LC4 Chaise Lounge was designed in 1928 by Le Corbusier in collaboration with Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand. Often described as the “machine for relaxing,” the LC4 embodies the modernist pursuit of functional purity and human-centered ergonomics.
The design features a curved reclining surface that rests within a fixed tubular steel base, allowing the upper frame to slide and adjust freely. This innovative mechanism enables continuous recline adjustment without mechanical complexity. The exposed steel structure contrasts with the leather or pony-skin upholstery, emphasizing industrial precision paired with sensual comfort.
Today, the LC4 is produced by Cassina as part of the official Le Corbusier® Collection. Its sculptural silhouette, engineering ingenuity, and timeless modernist identity make it one of the most recognizable chaise lounges in design history.
Le Corbusier:
(1887–1965) was one of the most influential architects and designers of the 20th century. Born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret in Switzerland, he later became a French citizen and adopted the name Le Corbusier. He was a pioneer of modern architecture, advocating for functional design, clean geometric forms, and the use of new industrial materials such as reinforced concrete, steel, and glass. His theoretical writings, including Vers une Architecture, helped define the intellectual foundation of the Modern Movement.
Le Corbusier developed the concept of the house as a “machine for living in,” emphasizing efficiency, proportion, and rational planning. He introduced the “Five Points of Architecture,” which included pilotis (support columns), free floor plans, free façades, ribbon windows, and roof gardens. These ideas were realized in iconic projects such as the Villa Savoye and later in large-scale urban visions like the Unité d'Habitation, reshaping how architects approached housing and city planning.
Beyond architecture, Le Corbusier was also a furniture designer, painter, and urban theorist. His collaborative furniture pieces, including the LC series, expressed structural honesty and minimalist elegance. His influence extended globally, including major works like the planned city of Chandigarh. Today, his legacy continues to shape contemporary architecture, design education, and modernist philosophy worldwide.
