Beaver Winch - Battery Capstan + Drum Winch
This is an open-source, drill battery-powered portable winch designed for quickly pulling rope or taglines in the field. It can be configured as either a capstan or interchangeable drum system, with each drum holding up to 100 m of 6 mm line or 300 m of 3 mm HMPE. Powered by standard drill batteries (dual 4 Ah in series for 40 V), it delivers up to 250 lb of peak torque and can handle long-distance pulls efficiently.
The build is highly accessible, requiring mostly 3D-printed parts and a single electronics order, making it easy to replicate, modify, and improve within the community. No power tools are needed. Only a soldering iron. Assembly takes around 2hrs.
All individual structural components have been break-tested to over 5 Knt. The total break strength is around 10Knt. A full bill of materials is included in the files, along with the Fusion 360 design file.
Total cost: $270usd
Main Body: 8 walls 25% Rectilinear infill (rotate the infill to go straight on the long way) PLA, PETG
**Drum: **10 walls 25% gyroid infill PLA, PETG This needs to be surprisingly strong since force is added on every wrap. After 300m of tight pulling, the drum walls are under tremendous tension.
