East-West Bag - Modular 3D Printed Fashion
In the summer of 2025, I spoke at the Bridges Math Art Conference. It's a wonderfully nerdy gathering where mathematics and programming meet art. :D While there, I was inspired by Marijana Paunović’s work Optical 3D Morphosis, which used raised pyramids to reveal shifting images depending on your viewing angle. That sparked an idea: what if I designed a bag that changes colour depending on how you look at it?
At the time, I was collaborating with Snapmaker on their new U1 3D printer, which supports multi-TPU printing. To push the printer’s capabilities, I created this East-West bag in just seven days, complete with colour-shifting panels and, for the first time in my work, a fully functional 3D-printed zipper woven directly into the design (a derivative of LoboCNC’s model on Printables).
✨ What’s included:
- 1 Almog base module (FREE STL)
- 3 square Almog variants to create the bag panels (STL)
- 3 triangular Almog variants for the sides of the bag (STL)
- 1 variant for the straps (STL)
- 6 models for the zipper (STL)
- Entire design sliced and ready to print for Snapmaker U1 Slicer (3MF)
- Illustrated assembly guide with size adjustment tips + module layout (PDF)
🧩 Skill level: Challenge Accepted – Patience and precision needed. 📐 Required Build volume: 270x270cm (for the zipper, without 200x200cm is enough) 🖨️ Required Filament: 95A TPU + PETG 📏 Modular, scalable, and fully size-customisable.
I’d love to see your version! Tag me @variableseams or send a photo – I’m always excited to see what you make.
✨ New to Almog? You can try the free base kit first to get a feel for the system before diving in.
