I designed this because I wanted something playful for a kid’s bedroom—something that feels cozy when the light is on but also adds a little magic when it’s off. The result is a ceiling-hanging lamp shade with a fun twist: two layers that work together to cast dinosaur silhouettes across the room.

The main shade sits around a standard A-nineteen bulb, giving it a clean, soft glow. Then comes the clever part—a secondary shade that wraps around the first. This outer shade is covered in dinosaur cutouts, so when the lamp is on, the dinos light up in crisp, glowing outlines. It really makes the shapes pop and gives the space a warm, playful vibe.

Assembly is completely glueless and straightforward. You’ll print two rings—just be sure to tell the top from the bottom. The dinosaur shade itself prints flat on the bed, then snaps into the rings. Once aligned correctly, it locks neatly around the main shade right where it should, no fuss, no tools.

Printing is simple but does take a bit of time since you’re making both shades and the rings. I kept tolerances tight so everything clicks together without extra finishing.

Printing Tips Print the dinosaur shade flat on the bed for best results. No supports needed. Standard layer heights around point two millimeters work well. I recommend at least three perimeters to keep the shades sturdy. The rings print quickly and should also be done flat on the bed.

I’d recommend experimenting with filament colors—white or translucent for the inner shade works beautifully, and a darker or contrasting color for the dinosaur layer makes the silhouettes really stand out.
