Spikey Spices - Cactus Salt and Pepper Shaker
Instructions Hardware Filaments
Spikey Spices - Intermediate
I have always wanted to make a plant that could be used as a salt and pepper shaker. My salt and pepper shakers always sit out on the table but they don't look nice. This cactus solves that! The cactus holds salt, and the pot holds pepper.
Salty Spines The cactus holds salt inside. Pick it up by the flower and tip it over and salt will come out of the spines!
Pepper Pot Pepper is stored inside of the pot, and come out of holes in the dirt. The holes are sized and spaces well so you get just the right amount of pepper. I hate when salt and pepper shakers have too small of holes and you have to shake it a ton to get anything to come out. This one makes that easy
Flower Funnel and Pistil Plug Filling up salt and pepper shakers can be annoying, but this cactus has a flower that acts as a build-in spice funnel! Just unscrew the pistil plug, and pour salt inside!

You sure do like cacti lol. Printing it now!

Print is awesome but any suggestions on how to get the spikes to stay in place? Some just fall out, glue will impede the salt from coming out. I also added magnets to the bottom of the cactus and the top of the dirt to keep them together when not in use but would look better if they were recessed in magnet slots. Any possibility you could incorporate this into your design?
Thank you for the feedback! My best suggestion for the spikes would be to add food safe glue if you need them you just have to do it very carefully
Slick idea with the flower funnel but the spikes need a rethink. Super painful to get them in place.
I love your files! I am however having a problem with the spikes on the salt shaker. I have printed them 3 times, one with petg, and still not having luck with them. the little tube just falls off the spikes.
Hi and I'm happy you love the designs!
If the spikes are breaking right off the build plate, you will want to make sure you are allowing the build plate to cool fully before you remove them. Using a razor to help peel them off helps a lot too (just be careful not to scratch your plate). You may also want to raise your print temperature if you aren't getting great layer adhesion.
Hello, I'm using Ultimaker Cura to open the files. I'm able to access all ".stl" files easily but I can't open the ".3mf" file in any of the projects. I'm getting: "There were no models in <filename>.3mf" error. Will you please help me fix this issue? Maybe I need to use a different software or a different setup for Cura but I'm not sure. Thank you!
Hi! The 3mf files are only set up for Bambu studio. You can use the stl files for Cura or you can download the Bambu Studio Slicer to use the 3mf.
is the flower supposed to stick to the cactus ? mine is not
You will need to glue the flower onto the cactus (see step 3 of the assembly instructions)
I'm getting an error: "Following object(s) have empty initial layer and can't be printed. Please cut the bottom or enable supports"
I've tried adjusting it and enabling supports but still won't let me print.
Hi there! That error message happens if you don't use the correct settings for spines. They are very thin and require special settings. They should be printed with 0.1 mm layer height and Arachne wall generator. Check the PDF for the suggested settings or use the included 3mf file (:
Hey! Does anyone know if this is food safe? I don’t want to give out things that aren’t food safe. Thank you!
As stated PLA and PETG are considered food safe but I would only use it for dry foods like these spices. With Liquids and sauces it gets a bit iffy.
PLA and PETG are food safe.... Just don't eat themself:)
