When young Nekokin comes of age they must leave the tribe and explore the world with the expectation of returning one day with all the knowledge they have gained to help the tribe flourish. When they set out they are awarded a ceremonial bell that has been passed down through the ages, and only once they return the bell to its shrine will they be allowed back into the community.
