Redesigning the Oreo AirTag Holder: A Smarter Multi-Part Assembly
A Fresh Approach to an Accessible Design
I recently revisited my Oreo AirTag holder and completely redesigned it to eliminate the need for a multi-color 3D printer. The goal? To make it more accessible while maintaining the signature look and feel of the original design. Instead of relying on multi-color printing, I developed a multi-part assembly that allows for easy printing in separate colors while ensuring a secure and seamless fit without glue.
Challenges and Design Solutions
The transition to a multi-part system introduced several design challenges:
- Wall Thickness and Structural Integrity
Moving from a single-color print to a multi-component structure meant re-evaluating wall thicknesses. Each piece needed to remain sturdy while fitting together without gaps or excessive force. - Interference Fit and Clearances
Achieving the right balance in tab and slot tolerances was crucial. Too tight, and assembly becomes difficult. Too loose, and the parts won’t stay securely connected. Through iterative prototyping, I refined the clearances to ensure a snug yet manageable fit. - A Durable Fastening Mechanism
Since glue was no longer an option, I had to rely entirely on mechanical fastening. I designed the assembly with interlocking features that securely hold the pieces together while allowing easy, tool-free assembly by hand.
The Benefits of the New Design
This updated Oreo AirTag holder brings several advantages:
- No Multi-Color Printer Required – Users can achieve a multi-color look with basic single-extruder machines.
- Easy Assembly – The press-fit design ensures a solid connection without glue or screws.
- Scalable for Production – Ideal for small businesses and Etsy shops, as it simplifies printing and assembly for batch production.
- Durable and Reliable – The fastening mechanism keeps the parts securely in place during everyday use.
- Customization-Friendly – Users can experiment with different color combinations and materials for a personalized touch.
Final Thoughts
By redesigning the Oreo AirTag holder into a multi-part assembly, I was able to increase its accessibility and usability while enhancing its durability. This approach not only makes the product more practical for a wider audience but also opens new possibilities for customization and small-scale production.
I’d love to hear what you think! Let me know if you print one and how it turns out.
