June 2026 Release - the Watermelon Lockbox
Hi Printsmiths! Summer is here, the Solstice is behind us, the sun shines bright, and picnics are a weekend occurrence. It just felt appropriate to capture the joy of summer vacation with the Watermelon Lockbox!
This release continues our loose “seasonal” theming from April and May, pairing up nicely with the Spring and Honeycomb Lockboxes. Our family is a huge fan of all things fruit salad and we’ve already cracked open a half dozen watermelons to keep our fridge well stocked week-to-week. We’ve even got a couple melon plants tucked away in our vegetable garden and we’re eager to see how those turn out later this summer.
I often times get inspired when researching materials and ideas for other projects, and this one is no different. As soon as I saw Polymaker’s Panchroma Pastel Watermelon PLA I knew exactly what my June design would be. I needed a variety of greens to match the melon look and feel, and quickly landed on PLA I used in prior prints, Pastel Mint and Forest Green, joining in with the newer Jungle Green, all from the Panchroma PLA line. A basic True Black PLA from Hatchbox for the seeds rounded out the color palette and the design pretty much created itself from there!
Font choice is one of the key design elements for our lockbox models as it can really tie the whole theme together. I wanted something that you could envision being used for fruit carving, something not too thin or wispy that would hold up to a chunkier motif like a melon rind. Once I stumbled upon Bubblegum Pop by Rian Hughes, I knew I’d found a good fit for the design in my head.
Our next lockbox is going to join in the celebration for America’s 250th Anniversary this year and I’m hoping to turn it around within the next week or two in time for the 4th of July. Keep an eye out for that coming soon!
In the meantime, I invite you to download the Watermelon Lockbox and give it a print yourself. I cannot wait to see your final builds!
My best, Peter
