July Release Preview

July Preview.jpgJuly's collection is taking it to the high seas with Sommos Pirates! The remnants of the Sommos Empire, located in the marshy Reed Sea, is on a large stretch of coast. It's only natural that bandits on land would also take to the oceans. This month we're adventuring with the crew of The Crooked Marlin (formerly just The Marlin), who are out for revenge against the mighty Kraken that gave the rebuilt ship its new moniker. Dashing Captain Dagon is leading the charge, while First Mate Padu (riding atop Murushu), barks out the orders to the crew. Not everyone wants to listen though; for example, 14th generation pirate Zulrida and her Pelican Bomber mount, Umu! Jonathan and Zu, Seagull Trappers, are not exactly the most obedient either...

July Preview2.jpgOur fantastic bases and terrain pack was sculpted by Calrais and Kittifizz this month, with concept art (including characters) done by Paul Ferret. You should definitely scroll through the WIPs to see his original sketches :D

We've fallen a bit behind on the Stats again, but will hopefully be catching up a little bit this month. Our stats are created by Conflux Creatures, who has tons of fun stats to choose from on his own Patreon.

Here's this month's Lore:

Zulrida, Sommos Pyraja Pirate

After the fall of the Sommos Empire, the majority of the populace turned to piracy and banditry. Zulrida’s ancestors were no exception; she’s a proud 14th generation pirate, a testament to the success and cleverness of her clan. While some branches of her family have settled down and become more like conventional merchants and traders, she continues the tradition of piracy just for the love of the game.

Umu, Pelican Bomber

Zulrida raised Umu from a hatchling, and they’ve been joined at the hip ever since. Through thick and thin, the two of them stick by each other and have won out against some pretty desperate odds. Umu commonly uses his large throat pouch to carry bombs and drop them from above, a rather devastating tactic against ships and crowds.

Jonathan & Zu, Seagull Trappers

These seagull trappers carry a net between them to capture fish and other prey. They may also trap unlucky travelers who might have valuables to give up… This particular species of seagull is quite intelligent, albeit fickle in their allegiance. They can be bribed with food, but are not very loyal or reliable - still, many pirate crews employ them, as the cutthroat culture suits them just fine.

Padu, Sommos Pyraja Pirate

First Mate Padu has a bit of an inferiority complex. Much to everyone’s annoyance, he constantly reminds everyone that despite not being the Captain, he’s still the First Mate, and that means he’s above the rest of the crew. To reinforce this difference in social standing, he insists on always riding on the meaty shoulders of his bodyguard, Murushu. A petty and demanding superior, he is universally hated by everyone except the Captain, and would have already been thrown overboard if not for Murushu. He spends most days haranguing the crew, barking orders at them from atop his muscly perch. As such, the ship’s discipline is better than most, and this is the reason for the Captain’s favor.

Murushu, Sommos Jow Pirate

Intelligence is not really his strong suit, so Murushu settled on the well-paid life of a bodyguard. His tiny, squeaky boss is not really the best employer, but he’s not the worst either; Padu pays on time, and handsomely, and also isn’t very heavy. Murushu is loyal to the coin, and as long as he keeps getting paid, will do his job well. Not trusting any of the other crew members, he keeps his gold in a chest that he carries at all times. His goal is to save up enough to buy his mother a nice house in Tiamar.

Dagon, Sommos Jow Captain

The dashing, swashbuckling Captain of The Crooked Marlin, Dagon has enough swagger for ten Jow even despite his peg leg. His confidence (bordering on arrogance), and his free hand with spoils, make him a very popular Captain amongst pirates. He relies on Padu to maintain the ship’s discipline, as he prefers to maintain his likable image. But don’t mistake him for a pushover; he is known for being serious about debts owed and paid, and has taken revenge on every pirate who has ever crossed him. As Dagon tells it, he lost his leg in a battle with a kraken during the storm of the century - as the kraken was crushing his ship to pieces his leg was caught in its grip as well. He has vowed to take one of its legs in return, and has been on the lookout for the fell beast ever since.
