January is a froggy month, as we adventure alongside the Amagaeru and Numakai in the Uragakure Barrow Realm. This swampy realm is tied to a secret entrance somewhere in the Mikata Wetlands, which rogue Hanzaki have accessed in order to hatch an unsanctioned Ryujin to start their own clan. In comparison to the Hikiga toad folk who live in the Mikata, the Amagaeru are frogs with much more acquatic prowess, lithe and acrobatic in contrast with the stolid Hikiga. Much closer to them are the Numakai, also toad folk, but who much more closely resemble their animal brethren (including their large variance in size and appearance).
As usual, our wonderful themed base and terrain pack was sculpted by Calrais, with concept art by Paul Ferret. We have a perfect fit with our throwback base and terrain pack this month, along with Hareto, Hanzaki Ninja riding his diplocaulus mount, and Zulrida, Sommos Pyraja Pirate riding her pelican bomber!

Kusato - Amagaeru Swordsman
The wielder of Hagiri, the Leaf Cutter, Kusato is an agile swordsman who stands on the front line. As part of the Wind clan, he has inherited secret techniques that enhance his speed beyond that of normal Amagaeru. Kusato actually flunked out of ninja school due to his complete inability to be stealthy, and was taken in by the Wind clan after showing promise with the sword.
Isamu - Amagaeru Brawler
Despite carrying matched katanas, Isamu prefers to fight with his fists. A skilled karate-ka, taking a hit from one of his punches is enough to put most opponents down for the count. It’s his belief that fighting hand-to-hand is more honorable and gentlemanly than fighting with weapons, and he only draws his swords when he intends to kill. Some of the Amagaeru joke that he only carries the swords for show, but truthfully he just hasn’t found a foe strong enough to require his swords in many years.
Tetsuha & Wakaba - Amagaeru Warrior
Tetsuha, known as the Iron Lady, wields an iron studded mace to devastating effect. An acrobatic fighter, she uses her own weight to counterbalance the heavy mace in whirling attacks that can crush stones. She’s currently training her daughter and apprentice, Wakaba, a young frog who hasn’t yet grown large and strong enough to carry her own mace. Wakaba has been carefully observing her mother’s techniques from atop Tetsuha’s back, and often runs interference or acts as a distraction to her mother’s foes.
Tobimaru & Hajike - Amagaeru Ninjas
This dynamic duo rely on Tobimaru’s recklessness, and Hajike’s stealth. Acting as a distraction, Tobimaru likes to rush headlong at the enemy with his signature battle cry, while Hajike silently dives in from an unexpected angle. Childhood friends, they’ve been doing this since they were both froglets and have excellent timing and coordination with each other.
Numakai
Toadfolk living in the Uragakure Barrow Realm alongside the Amagaeru. Though quite elusive and insular, they do come to the aid of their allies when in need. Their villages and strongholds are kept secret, and outsiders are not allowed to know their locations.
Ganmaru - Numakai Priest
The warrior-priest Ganmaru is a high ranking member of the Numakai, the toadfolk of the Uragakure Barrow Realm. Though he’s known mainly for his martial prowess, he is still a spiritual leader who oversees rituals and abides by certain precepts. He has taken strict vows against cruelty, disrespect to the spirits of the land, and other acts considered unworthy. He uses his ritual naginata to protect, and to guide spirits to the afterlife; no more and no less.
