December's collection is focusing on the Tengu, whom we haven't seen in a little while. Though we've been near the Demon Gate of Despair with the Sarugami, we can't neglect the role of the Daitengu. The Zuijin have wide ranging battle skills, from swordsmen like Hikenbo and Kenseibo, gunners like Hokibo, and magic/ritual users like Daranibo. We even have artificial tools like the Daitengu Marionette, controlled by Kotenbo from our February 2022 collection of Daitengu Outlaws 👀

Dec Preview.jpgCalrais sculpted our fantastic bases and terrain this month, with concept art from Paul Ferret. We have two base and terrain packs in our Throwbacks also, fittingly one that goes with last month's collection, and one that goes with this month! Alongside those, we have some Nemesis minions who make great smaller mobs for an encounter.

Conflux Creatures has helpfully created this index of all the collections he's done stats for, organized by Faction: https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/shareoYUL7FCY9x It's a little hard to cross reference right now, but I'm slowly working on some website changes so that we can look at the collections more easily on cobramode.com, and hopefully I can add the stats into there so that it'll be easier to find them.

As usual, the deeper lore can be found on the CobraCompendium: https://bit.ly/3om6snO

This month's lore below:

Hokibo - Daitengu Zuijin

Hokibo is a strange and crafty old fox, one of the oldest Zuijin still living today. In fact, his actual age is unknown - he claims to have been a young child when the Eight Sages first created the sealed gate. But that would put him at several hundred years old, extraordinary even for the long-lived Daitengu. Most assume that he’s telling tall tales, especially given his odd behavior and bizarre sense of humor, but it’s true that even the oldest Daitengu only remember him as an old man. Despite his advanced age, he’s still as spry as any of the elite warriors and is known for his sharpshooting skills with the hinawaju.

Hikenbo - Daitengu Zuijin

Known as the Flying Sword, Hikenbo blends Qi techniques with his swordsmanship skills to create a unique hyper-speed sword style. His Qi concentration is so high that it’s evident in his hair, which stands on end rigidly as though electrified. Because of the intensity of his technique, he exudes an aura of stress and uptightness, and finds it hard to slow down and relax.

Daitengu Marionette

One of Kotenbo’s creations, this Daitengu marionette can be controlled from a relatively short distance. A skilled puppetmaster, Kotenbo is able to control several of these marionettes simultaneously, bolstering her own relatively weak melee attack capabilities. This marionette has four arms each wielding a sword, making it a fairly difficult opponent to fight against. However the marionette itself can only perform actions dictated by Kotenbo, and is thus limited by her own lack of knowledge on swordsmanship techniques.

Kenseibo - Daitengu Zuijin

The Sword-Saint of the Zuijin, Kenseibo’s imposing figure causes lesser demons to flee just at the sight of him. He carries the ancestral named sword, Enjamaru, the Flame-Serpent Blade, which has been passed down in his family for generations. He was trained from a young age to inherit the sword and its techniques, and has been carefully training his younger relatives so that one can inherit it eventually. Though he’s more than hale enough to carry on for decades to come, he knows there are no certainties in battle.

Daranibo - Daitengu Zuijin

Daranibo is the last priestess of the Meikei-in, the Temple of the Nether-Contracts, which contained the forbidden mantras that allow tengu to summon and control ghosts. Once their most promising disciple, when she summoned and bound her first ghost, Usuemi, she learned the true nature of Meikei-in and what it was built on. Filled with rage and sorrow, she destroyed the temple and trapped her former masters’ souls in their mantra boxes, where they wait to be summoned by the last priestess.

Usuemi (“Faintly Smiling Mask”)

At first seeming tender, Usuemi’s subtle expression hides her monstrous form. Her resentment and hatred for what the Meikei-in did to her has warped her into a vengeful spirit of immense power.
