What size/number are the rubber bands supposed to be?

J.D. C
jd.cain.jr

I also need this. Maybe it's a US thing but all the rubber bands I have around the house are much wider than the ones used in in the phones and they don't work well.

O

Your right. I had to special order rubber bands from Amazon.

Std American Rubber bands seem to be ~65mm diameter @ 1mm x 2.75mm VS the 60mm diameter bands which are 1.4mm x 1.5mm in comparison. Std American can work with some effort, but for the pen hold down i had to snip of fa bit so it is not connected. so far is fine as it is pinched very tight due to the size difference and the cut is in the middle of the long strait section and not moving.

I tried a #33 rubber band. I was able to get it into the pen holder, but I've snapped two trying to get it into the back cover. It's very frustrating.

S
sully3592

I Took my snips and made a small cut and tore off the back half. It worked like a champ. The sides still have the full channels, so it's quite snug. I'll post a photo in the discord.

Yes definitely post a photo! Need to know more about these US rubber band sizes

Gazzaladra

Ohhhhh that is interesting! I did not know that there is this other type of rubber band, if you happen to have the time, please join the discord with maybe some photos and more measurements so I can see what's going on there!

The back cover bar was a fight to get it to work and was only doable with soft jawed clamps to hold the band in place while the rest was worked in, additional clamping to hold as needed till done. And the back bar had to be set in place with the same/bigger camp (for more pressure) but it did get in eventually.

I too struggled with rubber band selection. I have found some that fit, but they still aren't good. I had to go right round the spine to get it to work which doesn't look great from the outside edge. I feel like working in a piece of filament might have been a good alternative, like that of the hinges, slide a piece of filament through an eyelet at the top and bottom and use a lighter to melt the tip to keep it in place.

J
jemson

The pen insert I also find unusable with the rubber bands. If the pen slotted into a slot on the outer edge to hold the book closed and eliminate that rubber band as well, I think this would be awesome. It would also remove the holes on the inner cover which are problematic writing on the left side of first pages.

Gazzaladra
Gazzaladra

That depends a little on your preference and several sizes work, but 60 mm seem to work best in my opinion!

Update: I am currently looking into making an additional version for these rubber band, will post a changelog once it's done and tested

Looks fantastic in rainbow silk PLA, although for consistency it is better if you print both the front and back cover on one bed. The back bar with the rubber band is a very tight fit. After a few minutes of almost breaking it, I discovered that if you flex the outside part of the back cover just slightly away/down (without breaking it!) and then push the bar in, it works a treat. Do this for all 3 sides and it pops in without an issue. Any chance for those with a big enough bed for an A3 size one of these i.e. A4 when folder. Can you just size the design up to make it work?

Noticed you said the US Letter needed a 230x230mm bed just wanted to let you know that it will work on a 225x225mm bed as well! Can’t wait to print the rest of it!

I’d love an option with a flat top so we can make use of top surface patterns like octagram spiral or use “fancy” buildplates for the outside surface

When I printed the US Half Letter Paper version, I forgot that I was out of rubber bands. I found that Hair Ties are a perfect fit, and I don't have to worry about them breaking anytime soon!

I love the idea, maybe you could design a middle-connector piece, which would allow for extending the book even more by adding more than one back piece/spine to it? so the book construction would be front/spine/middle connector/spine/back ...Just as an idea

This is done!

Alex L
kahhenglee2000

Can you please make a connector between spines? The connector should somehow looks like the hinge of the cover, but two sided to connect both spines together. Trying to have a huge notebook with two spines and connect them through hinge and filament.

Gazzaladra
Gazzaladra

I have this on my improvement list! But every hinge adds a gap that might mess with the writing flow - I am on it though

Alex L
kahhenglee2000

how about a new set of spine where one side is just normal 3 hinge, and another side design to have 2 hinge (like the cover). This might reduce the added distance. But i am sure you have thought of this. Looking forward to it! Thanks

Larger size and G-2 Ink

I printed the Letter size version and I love it!

Would it be possible to offer an 8.5" × 11" (US Letter) notebook designed to hold folded 11" × 17" sheets? That format would be much more practical for the type of work I do.

Additionally, could you make it compatible with Pilot G-2 ink refill cartridges?

T
Tunedgearhead

I don't see the alternate spine file I see the 6 spine but all the spines are the same lined up.

Clarissa H
hallrissa15

you should definitely make a compact storage case for the spines!! so you can slip it into a backpack!

Approximately how long would this take to print? I'm considering going to my local library which has 3d printers available for use, and printing the pieces there. However, there are limits on how long a project is allowed to take before they deny the request. If this takes less than 3 hours, it should qualify for printing there, which would rock! If it will likely take longer, I may have to look elsewhere or just save up enough to buy a printer of my own before trying to make it.

Edit: For reference, I'm hoping to print the largest size notebook (But I'll settle for whatever smallest size works, if any) and the library uses a ‘Bamboo x1 Carbon’

W
WillSkelton

I'm on the same printer.

I just imported the 3mf file he has for the US Letter sized notebook, and set it to use the same color to save on time (and also cause Idk if your library has the AMS to swap filament). The estimates came out to 2h38m for the front, spine, and pen and then 2h05m for the back and insert.

Lance M
orbitdropper

Great design! I have a question though, is it possible to make the "spine" of the book modular? Like I can get 3 "4" spines and link them together so I can have a 12 spine?

I typically use these journals (link below), which are listed as A5. I attempted printing the A5 infinite notebook and it's way too small. Any recommendations?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BL71BZML?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1

W
WillSkelton

I got bit by this too. I wanted to use letter paper folded in half so I printed the half-letter and it was too small. Then I realized the size in the model is the size of the paper you're using, not the notebook.

Give the A4 notebook a try.

Is there a possibility of a version with a “flat” front and back cover? I LOVE this design idea, but worry that the “tierd” layer lines of the cover may begin to fray and snag the inside of my bag, and I also prefer the look and feel of a simpler texture.

Apologies if this has already been discussed, and thank you for your wonderful creations! I have been following you on YouTube for some time now, and I always get so excited when I see a new one pop up!

Gazzaladra
Gazzaladra

Hiii so you don't have to worry about stability as this series has been in usage for years now. A flat version right now is not planned. This would remove the key feature to be ergonomic when writing. At the spine you need the thickness for the hinge

Just downloaded and started printing! Could you modify the pen to fit a Uniball ONE (0.7mm) cartridge? They are my favorite pens in the world. https://a.co/d/09GP5kFb

Jannah S

How can I print the other spine sizes also in 2 different colours like the one that comes with the .3mf file? The .stl files provided are all just one colour...

Select the fill tool in your slicers painting setting and simply click on the surface :) turn the edge detection really low

Love the design, but struggling really hard to fit the inserts in for both US sizes. I checked the updated version just to be sure and its the same size I have. I even tried the bending method mentioned in one of the comments and its still not going all the way.

I'd also suggest throwing up some links to Amazon rubber bands that are the right size and thickness for reference. Hard to find ones in the US that are thin and the right size.

Gazzaladra
Gazzaladra

The updated version has a different insert design, have you printed it already? It specifically addresses the issues with US rubber band. It works with size 33 and 32 - the most common ones

D

The tolerances for the hinge holes are extremely tight, and the rubber band closure mechanism feels overengineered but its a good concept.

Gazzaladra
Gazzaladra

The tollerances are quite generous, maybe some overextension or something else going on there?

Marissa S
marissastockton

This has been failing multiple times and the holes on the spines malform easy. It's defiantly a project and eventually I got one to print and put together. We'll see if it was worth the money, time, filament, and effort.

Guilherme M

The pen holder mechanism is really bad, at least with rubber bands n18 I managed to insert it, but, they are waaay to big and you can't tension them correcly.

Is there a magic for getting the bar that holds the rubber band that holds the notebook closed to go in?

Teitzel V
boffinbear

Hi, I had the same problem and spent a few minutes almost breaking it. Without breaking the back cover, hold the inside and bar with one hand and slightly flex the cover away from it. The bar now should pop in. Do this for all 3 sides and works a treat. I'll post a photo with my make.

Yes! The 3MFs only included one spine size, to not confuse people. It's a one-click coloring: take your spine STL, go to the coloring menu, use the fill function and fill the flat inner face with one click, thats how I did it. :)

Thank you, I did not have Edge Detection on in the Fill Option so it did not work when I tried. After some additional attempt it worked. Thank you!
