Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty,
Officially titled Liberty Enlightening the World, is a colossal neoclassical monument on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. A gift from the people of France to the United States, it was dedicated on October 28, 1886, to celebrate the centennial of American independence and the shared values of freedom and democracy. Standing 305 feet tall from the ground to the tip of its gold-leafed torch, the copper-clad figure depicts the Roman goddess Libertas. She holds a tablet inscribed with the date of the Declaration of Independence and steps over broken chains, symbolizing the end of tyranny and the abolition of slavery.
