Magic Ball Kinetic Desk Sculpture
Hey, this is a motorized Version of the Magic Ball for your Desk! I used a USB Motor so no electrical knowledge is required.
You need: "TT Motor DC5V 59RPM CCW Single Axis". Can be bought for roughly 1€. 1 Housing 1 Top 1 Bottom 1 Driving Gear 3 Gears 1 3 Gear 2 3 Gear 3 3 Gear 4 1 Gear 5 1 Bevel Gear 1 Cone Gear 1 Heart 1 Motor Gear 13 Big Connectors 7 Small Connectors 2 Small Long Connectors 1 Big Long Connector
Print Settings: Try to print Gears 1-5 as light weight as possible. That makes the sculpture smoother in the end. The “Top” Piece may need supports depending on your printer. Everything else prints with standard settings. No supports.
Assembly: I made an Assembly Video: https://youtu.be/THXUthkkb2o There is also an Assembly PDF included in the download and that cal also be found here: https://than.gs/pr/250831
Technical Data: One sculpture takes roughly 18h to print and 400g of Filament in total. I used Protopasta Nebula Multicolor and Polymakers PolyTerra Black

Finally got it to work, I started with motors from Bambu, I could not get it to spin with the motor. so i reprinted with 2 walls and 5% fill but it still did not work. Then i got in some motors from Aliexpress and it runs fine. Way more torque, even though specs are the same. https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256809023602443.html And it has a much longer cord also.
That's nice to know, thank you! I did some test orderings and those motors vary a lot unfortunately.
Can't wait to make this- can the gear ball come off of the motor and be used independently, or must it remain connected? Great either way just curious
It sadly cant be detached. Thats not possibile sadly.
It's still an incredible piece and I love it. Thank you!
Assembling the ball is quite a challenge. Took me several times to get all the pieces in the right place towards each other. There are probably a couple billion possible combos but only one that works. So, I finally did get the ball assembled and now the design of the motor connection to ball does not seem to work. The motor spins and spins but the 2nd gear, being held in by one of those little "H" joints does not stay engaged so it does not spin the top gear at all.
