Darth Keyring

3D Printer filament can be degraded by moisture, some plastics more so than others, hence controlling moisture levels will improve the filament quality and, as a result, lead to better print quality, too.

I house each of my filament rolls in an individual dry box.  I maintain the moisture levels by including a box of desiccant inside the dry box.  I also monitor the moisture level with an in-built hygrometer.

Filament impacted by moisture exhibits the following characteristics, brittle "like spaghetti" (PLA), increased stringing (eg. PETG) and "bubbling" (eg. Nylon, TPU) to name just a few.

The individual dry box approach allows me to customise the degree to which I can maintain the individual reel moisture levels.  My Nylon filament is kept at a level of less than 15% humidity whilst PETG is maintained at less than 20% humidity.

To control moisture at different levels means having different amounts of included desiccant in each filament dry box.  So, to that end I have different size desiccant boxes to meet my varying desiccant amount needs.  Including more desiccant also means less frequent need to dry out the desiccant.

I designed custom boxes to enclose the desiccant with lots of small holes for air circulation.  The box size is 190 x 60mm with a press fit lid.  The box come in two sizes, 20 and 30mm high (outside dimensions).  The boxes hold about 125g and 300g of Silica Gel, respectively.

Over time, the Silica Gel will need refreshing and drying out.  Follow manufacturer guidelines on the drying process.  Note, heat Silica Gel outside of the 3D printed box.

The 3D printed box lid nicely friction fits onto the box.  The risk of the box accidently being knocked open is low, but should it happen, that's a lot of desiccant pieces to get scattered, retrieve and clean up, so I place a rubber band around the filled box.

NOTES
- There are factors that will affect duplicating my results.  These factors include your environment, effective dry box seals, quality of Silica Gel.  If unsure, the simple rule is more Silica Gel the better.

- This approach to keeping filament dry is effective for filament that is already dry.  Desiccant alone will not remove moisture that has already been absorbed by the filament.  A filament drying process not covered here is required.

- There are alternatives to Silica Gel to remove moisture from the air that can be effective, too.  These alternatives are more or less effective, relative to Silica Gel, hence the quantity placed in this box will need adjusting, accordingly.

I've seen these sub hooks being sold that fit over a coat hangar to allow accessories or even another coat hangar to be dangled from.  A simple idea that can be easily reproduced with a 3D printer and at a low cost.

Here is my design that duplicates the functionality of the hooks.  The choice of 3D filament type is open.

Hangar Sub Hook

The Honda Wing logo started life in 1947, just prior to the formation of the Honda Motor Company, by Soichiro Honda himself as a symbol of his dream for the future success of his business.  The latest wing design first appeared in motorcross from 1973/74.  It's an ode to freedom, speed, and the soaring sensation that comes with riding a bike.

I've reproduced a likeness to the logo and made it 3D printable.

My print is made in eSUN PLA+ Black and PLA eSilk Gold filaments, with 0.2mm layer height and 15% infill on a Bambu Lab X1 Carbon printer.  An AMS is used for colour changes.  No supports required.

Honda Moto Logos

Being a proud owner of a Tesla Model 3, I was looking for ways to improve my car use experience.  I do find that shopping bags can fall and lose their content into the boot of the car.  Placing the bag into one of the car's bays is one approach, but a trunk hanging hook is a simple approach, too.  The Model 3 (and Y) have a protruding M6 bolt which can be utilised for a hook mount.

There are other similar trunk hook designs available for download, never-the-less I decided to create my own design.  My design had to meet the following criteria:
   - Be strong.
   - Be straightforward to print.
   - Be able to handle the high temperatures common in cars.

I ended up choosing PETG filament to make the hook with.  Fitted to the printed part is a M6x15mm metal screw insert similar to the following part:

Tesla Model 3 Trunk Hook

I managed to misplace (lose!) my vacuum concetrator nozzle fitting for my Makita DCL180Z 18V LxT vacuum cleaner.  The concentrator is a useful fitting, so decided to design and print a replacement part.

My concentrator part is about 130mm long.  Printing a longer length nozzle would need to be printed with a "raft" to improved the print bed surface area adherence.  The shorter length nozzle is quite effective and works nicely.

Here is my design for a token playing card, the Ace of Spades.  The card dimensions are about 78 x 51mm and 2mm thick.

Ace of Spades

I have on one of my past projects some M6 nuts that can come loose.  So I have a need to adjust the nut tension every so often.  I want to be able to just finger tighten the nut and don't want to go out and buy metal butterfly/wing nuts.

My simple solution to my butterfly nut needs was to 3D print a part that fits around the existing M6 nut providing the "wings" to finger tighten the nut.  The printed part colour also matches nicely with the past project colour.  There's a thin printed layer on the printed part to go on the bolt side of the nut to keep the butterfly nut in-place.  This thin layer is only 0.2mm, so won't demand much from the bolt length.

Butterfly or Wing Nut M6

If all you want is a bolt that can be thumb tightened, here is a way to get there.  The M4 bolt I used has a hex head with measurement of about 7mm across (flat-to-flat) and a depth of 3mm.  My thumb screw part sits around the bolt head which can be secured with a suitable glue, eg. CA glue, Epoxy resin.

Thumb Screw Head

This is a 3D printable 12mm mount for a pneumatic PC4-10 connector.  The mount secures to a thin panel's 12mm hole via a 3D printable nut.  The PC4-10 can accept a 4mm PTFE tube.

The PC4-10 connector is a common pneumatic part and can be sourced from multiple sources.

These 3D printed nuts and bolts should only be finger tightened.  Care!  Over tightening of the nut will sheer the screw from its head.

Pneumatic PC4-10 Mount (PTFE)

Here is a holster for my Leatherman Wave Classic (the original Wave tool) multitool.  I like that I can remove and replace the multitool with one hand, quickly and easily.  Other holsters I have seen rely on friction or a flap to keep the mutlitool in-place; not either convenient nor secure for my needs.

The holster retains the knife in position with a Neodymium magnet.  The holster secures to your belt with an integrated belt clip.  The belt clip supports belts up to 38mm (1.5in).

I use a salvaged Neodymium magnet from an old 3.5in hard drive, used without the metal plate.  The magnet is curved and about 31 x 13 x 1.25mm in size.  Other similar sized magnets may work, but test the magnetic hold strength to ensure that the tool can be held in-place during your intended activities.  I secured the magnet to the printed holster with CA (Super) glue.

The belt clip attaches to the holster via two self-tapping countersunk 3mm x 7mm screws.

To note, the current Leatherman Wave tool is the Wave+.  Unfortunately, the tool dimensions have changed enough to not fit into my current holster design.  If someone can direct me to complete and accurate measurements for the current Wave+, I'd consider releasing a revised holster to fit.

My print is made in 1.75mm eSUN PLA+ filament, with 0.2mm layer height and 15% infill on a Bambu X1 Carbon printer.  Print supports are not required.  Parts are by default orientated in the way I printed them on the print bed, which should give it maximum strength.  Probably wise to include a brim when printing the belt clip part vertically.

Leatherman Wave (Classic) Holster

My metal tweezers invariably get magnetised from general use.  Normally getting magnetised is not a problem and can be demagnetised with some effort, too.  The magnetism becomes an nuisance when handling small nuts and bolts that I often do.

Instead of constantly fiddling with my demagnetiser, I decided to design my own non-metallic tweezers.  These tweezers are made with PLA-CF and have very good rigidity, hence spring open nicely.

I've shared two tweezers with different tips, large and small, respectively.

Tweezers (2 types)

The Nitecore Digicharger D4 is my go to charger for my Eneloop and 18650 rechargeable batteries.  It delivers a decent battery current and can do one to four cells, simultaneously.  It's open top design allows batteries to be inserted and removed quickly, but overtime, allows the inside to collect dust.  My cover design, when regularly used, significantly reduces dust from accumulating inside the battery compartment.

The cover can be used on the battery charger with batteries inserted or not.  The cover also allows heat ventilation for charging batteries.  The plastic filament to use for the 3D print is unimportant.

Nitecore D4 Charger Dust Cover

This project is for those that have a need to spin yarn into a tightly meshed ball so that the yarn can be neatly stored or used.  There are inexpensive manual yarn winders for this spinning purpose.  These winders typically have a handle for the user to rotate to spin the yarn and cost typically US$20-30.  Powered winders are also available, but at a much higher price of US$300-600.

My project creates an electrically powered yarn winder.  The electric winder sources some parts from a manual winder, adds an electric motor, all combined with custom designed 3D printed parts and power by USB-C.

I welcome those wishing to reproduce my yarn spinner as I built it.  I do warn, this project is for an experienced builder.  The following skills will be required:
- Ability to cut steel
- Ability to source like components.
- Ability to 3D print my designed parts.
- Ability to solder electrical wires.

Parts List:
- Yarn spinner (for parts)
- 3D printed parts.
- RS445-ST/18140/DV DC motor with 14 pins fitted gear.
- MT3608 DC-DC inverter module.
- 5mm 40mm bolt, washers and 2 nuts.
- 6mm 20mm bolt, washers and 2 nuts.
- Toggle switch SPST
- USB-C panel mount socket.
- Potentiometer 20KOhm, panel mount.
- Resistor 10 Ohm, 0.25W
- 5V LED indicator
- 6mm knob
- Electrical wire, typically 22awg.

To get sufficient torque from the electric motor, gears are used.  The two motor drive gears provide a ratio of about 3:1, transforming surplus speed into extra torque.

The DC motor I used is a salvaged RS445-ST/18140/DV motor with a metal gear with 14 teeth. Ø=34mm x 52mm and weighs about 90g.  These motors can be purchased new or used for around US$10.

The electric motor is a nominal 12V DC.  I control the motor speed by starting with 5V from a USB source and via a buck inverter (MT3608), vary the voltage from 5 to around 12V.  The motor typical is running at 3-4W of power, hence a simple 5W USB plug pack can comfortably power the unit.

Powered Yarn Spinner

If you only need a small number of wire clamps, here's a quick way to satisfy that need, 3D print them.  I never have the right size wire clamp on-hand.  To resolve that issue, I just print the sizes and quantities I need at the time.

Here is my design that includes a clamp suitable for the following three wire sizes, 4, 6 and 8mm.  The mounting screw hole is optimised for a 3.5mm countersunk self-tapping screw.

I used PLA+, but most materials are suitable to make a clamp.  So, choose filament type based on environmental conditions and clamp strength/flexibilty required.

My print is made in eSUN PLA+ 1.75mm White/Blue/Red filaments, with 0.2mm layer height and 100% infill on a Bambu X1 Carbon printer. No supports required.  Brim recommended.

Sandy the Pet Rock

It's important to keep your workbench clear from clutter.  My Foredom like handpiece ends up on my workbench, so I designed this simple mount to securely hold the handpiece whilst not directly in use.  The mount accepts two 3.5mm pan head screws.  Orientation of the mount is unimportant for my needs.

The mount has a inner diameter of 26mm, so it maybe useful for other uses, as well.

Mount for Foredom Handpiece

The APX6000 is a radio commonly adopted in enterprise solutions and by emergency service organisations.  It's useful to clip the radio to your belt and operate the radio via a wired microphone.

We never seem to have enough belt clips for all our radios.  Replacement belt clips are expensive, too.  Here is my design for a belt clip that will do an effective job to secure the radio to your belt.

When screwing the metal insert into the plastic, ensure that it is heated and do it slowly, reheating as you go.  I used a soldering iron, heating the insert in-place as I applied it.

The clip can be made in most plastics, though I would not recommend straight PLA due to it being brittle.  I found PLA+ effective as it gives a bit.  Note that all types of PLA don't like being left in the sun, so if that could be a problem, go for PETG or a stronger plastic.

Motorola APX6000 Belt Clip

Yet another bag clip. Here is a useful bag clip that tightly closes a folded plastic bag or similar.  This design is printed as a single part.

My design does not use much filament and comes in three sizes.  The three clip sizes included with clamping sizes of 60, 90 and 120mm, respectively.

For heavy and wide clamping, I've included two versions of the 120mm clamp, 10 and 12mm wide.  The 12mm wide clamp still flexes, but flexes less (my favourite).

I experimented printing the clips in PETG and PLA+.  Both gave what appeared to be quite pliable and usable clips.  I did notice that the PLA+ got more brittle whilst clamping a bag in the freezer and breaking.  In the end, it comes down to your intended use case.  PETG being the most robust of the two filaments I tried.
