For easy mixing of tea cream without spilling. Requires an Ikea $3 battery-powered milk frother and a small Ikea fork (Dragon dessert fork). The fork prevents the liquid from rotating too fast and spilling over the cup. The printed part doesn't come into contact with the liquid.


For 3D printing, I recommend using dry PETG printed at a higher temperature for better layer adhesion.


**Assembly** requires a bit of force to insert the frother and the fork. Pay attention not to break the print or cause injury.

Adapter for Sun filter sheet. Print two covers and locks. The cutting guide can be used to cut the sheet to size (round). The sheet should be handled with care.

Looking into the Sun is dangerous for the eyes. I used the Thousand Oaks 8" Sun filter which came with two sheets. Half of one is enough for the binoculars.

Relatively quick purge tuning for multi-color 3D printing. For Bambu Lab 3D printers or other single-nozzle multi-material solutions (MMU, ERCF, Palette).

Less accurate than [my Z-stacks](https://bit.ly/purge-zstacks), but does only one color change per color combination (vs 3.5 for the Z-stacks) and is faster to print. Usage is very similar to the Z-stacks model, using the same print settings.

I use this first to get a rough idea of which purge volumes need increasing. Then I print the Z-stacks model for further fine-tuning and better color checking.

**How to calibrate all colors**
- Calibration is needed every time filaments are changed, even when replacing a spool with another similar color.
- Pick the files for the specific number of colors to calibrate. The first digit in the file name represents the number of colors. Example: for 3 colors pick the files named 3-1, 3-2, and 3-3. Ignore files named "manual" unless you're testing specific transitions only (see next section). Only one tower can be printed at a time.
- Load the files in the slicer all at once (Bambu Studio or Prusa Slicer) Click YES to load them all as a single object with multiple parts (just like you would do for loading multi-part color models).
- Assign one color to each part. (In Bambu Studio, with the filament list loaded, look on the left side, under Process, and switch to Objects view. Then click the first part (eg 3-1) and press number 1. Click the next part (eg. 3-2) and press number 2 and so on). The model should show up colored.
- Make sure the material colors in the slicer resemble the actual filament colors somewhat and that they are synchronized with the printer.
- Prepare initial flushing volumes. One way to start is to use the Auto-Calc button on the Flushing Volumes window and reduce the multiplier to something like 0.5. Lower values will require more work, while higher values produce more waste.
- Print the model to check the transitions. See recommended print settings below.
- Carefully check all transitions on the printed tower. Each 4mm tall section should have a uniform color. If there is a color gradient, it means there's color bleeding. For all transitions showing color bleeding, increase the purge volumes. The 4mm sections use 400 mm³ of material, so a transition that uses half of the length would be 200 mm³. You'll have to eyeball it and it's sometimes difficult to tell whether or not the transitions are perfect. Use whichever side is easier to "read" for you. Note that Bambu Studio always rounds values up to at least 100mm³ when using a purge tower.
- To further tune and more accurate checks, continue printing the [Z-stacks model](https://bit.ly/purge-zstacks) which works in a similar way.
- Save as project to not lose the purge volumes. It's easy to have them reset. This way you can load the project with the values when using these specific filaments.

**How to calibrate selected color transitions** when only a few transitions require checking
- instead of loading the entire tower, decide how many color transitions you need to check, then load files called "manual". They include up to 22 transition pairs. You can load more than needed and remove the excess later.
- color each part with the colors needed for each transition you want to check.
- delete any pairs that are not needed.
- print the tower and adjust flushing volumes as explained in the previous section.

**Print settings**
Either use the settings below or import the [Bambu Studio print profiles](https://mihaidesigns.com/p/purge-optimization/bambu-studio-purge-test.zip).
- switch process to Global in Bambu Studio
- start with the standard print profile
- switch to advanced mode
- under Quality, use layer height 0.4mm
- first layer height 0.4mm
- all line widths: 0.55mm
- under Strength: 0 top shell layers
- 1% sparse infill density
- aligned rectilinear sparse infill pattern
- infill direction 90 (infill settings needed to support internal walls)
- under Speed: outer wall 25 mm/s
- inner wall 25 mm/s (needed to allow for enough layer cooldown and avoid speed changes between transition layers and single-color layers so they don't look different)
- under Others: set brim-object gap to 0
- disable prime tower (important!). Also, make sure all values in the Flushing volumes window are 100 or higher. I'll publish a printer profile that does this automatically, but it's not fully ready at this time.

Purge calibration flat stacks for Bambu Lab and other single extruder multi-color 3D printers

For use with Bambu Lab 3D printers or other single-nozzle multi-material solutions (MMU, ERCF, Palette).

This is the most accurate solution I found for tuning filament purge length, but also a bit annoying: it tells which purge lengths are too low, but doesn't say by how much the value is off. It takes a while as you have to run it multiple times. I also use a custom printer profile which I will publish once it's ready. This can still work without it.

There are 7 color changes for every two color combinations.

Thangs won't let me upload .zip files with a folder structure, so the files are all mixed up.

- all line widths: 0.55mm
- under Strength: 0 top shell layers

Purge Calibration Z-stacks for Bambu Lab and other single extruder multi-color 3D printers

I designed this back in 2019 to split 2kg spools into 1kg spools.
Used to transfer filament between two spools:
- Spool ID down to 12mm
- Spool OD up to 300mm
- Maximum spool height/thickness depends on the inner diameter (at least 110mm for most spools)

**Print** all parts once. They are pre-oriented with built-in supports. Outer brim can help for the standing parts. You can use 3 perimeters for the vertical columns, but 2 is probably enough. No other special settings. I printed in PETG.

**Sourced parts**
- M3x30mm screw (or longer)
- 4x 6001 bearings
- power drill
- piece of 4x2mm PTFE tube, 20-30cm long
- small pieces of filament for assembly (I use nylon filament, but PETG or TPU are also good options). PLA may work as well but is more brittle

No detailed assembly instructions. Just a few glimpses in the video above.

**Operation**
This device can be dangerous. Use it at your own risk.
**Do not use high speeds and avoid sudden stops!** The source spool has no braking system and will continue to unwind and can tangle the filament.
Do not touch the filament with an empty hand/skin while it's being transferred between spools (always use the PTFE tube). Do not try to stop a spool rotating at high speed with bare hands.

**Printing**
Parts are pre-oriented and with supports included.
Choose the 230mm version (230mm thick spools) if you can print 246mm tall pieces, otherwise choose the 190mm version (prints 206mm tall)

Parts to print:
- 1 roller (230mm or 190mm)
- 2 connectors (same size as roller)
- 1 roller cap
- 2 sides

Recommended stronger than normal settings. Perhaps 3-4 perimeters/walls, at least 20% cubic or grid infill. The roller and cap are the most sensitive parts. I printed in Fiberlogy Vertigo PETG.
I print at the higher end of the recommended temperature range for better layer adhesion.
To avoid roller seam, I suggest printing the roller separately with random seam position.

**Assembly**
Requires no screws, but is a bit tricky to assemble and can use some help from a second person.
Screw in the connectors to one side without tightening.
Hold the second side at the other end of the connectors.
Unscrew the two connectors while continuing to hold the sides at the ends of the connectors.
Screw in the two connectors at the same time to both sides and gently tighten. Spool holder is now assembled.
Screw the roller cap into the roller.
Place the roller on top of the spool holder. it should rotate easily. Make sure it's centered. For heavy spools, use a bit of grease at the contact points.

Handle with care and avoid shocks or dropping heavy spools on it. For direct-drive extruder use a reverse Bowden tube (PTFE) connected to the 3D printer frame to avoid jerk.

**Compatibility (updated)**
Fits the 3 different versions of the AMS units. However, the fit for the older version (3 large gaps on the sides instead of 4) is slightly offset and the bottom box will protrude out a bit.

**Materials**
- about 500g of filament
- optional 10x404mm metal rod/pipe (such as an aluminum pipe) cost me about $2 at the hardware store
- optional two M3 grub screws 6-12mm long and compatible Allen (hex) key (you can find them in sets on Amazon for $10-20), OR use long normal M3 screws, like M3x30 or M3x40 and only screw in a quarter of the length
- optional felt pads for the bottom AMS unit for easier sliding

**Printing**
There's an optional small test-fit part that can be printed first for checking potential fitting issues. Let me know so I can add more files with different clearances or different rod diameters.
Pick either the decorated version or the plain version. 2 files need to be printed and they are pre-oriented, no supports required.
I prefer PETG, 2 perimeters, 12% cubic infill, and a good amount of brim. Takes close to 15 hours to print with the Generic PETG profile.

**Assembly**
Cut the metal rod to 404mm long, then insert it in both printed parts.
Fit the AMS unit at the top.
Screw in the two grub screws at the back alongside the rod to lock it in place.

**Troubleshooting**
For the lid clip to work, printer needs to be well calibrated, with a flat and leveled build plate and extrusion calibration. If the lid is still difficult to take off, try filing the lid clips. If the lid releases by itself, try increasing XY Size Compensation.
For safety precautions, I don't recommend holding the full box by the lid.
