This is an X carriage for an Ender 3 style printer, which uses a 2020 extrusion for the X gantry. It mounts on a linear rail, and includes a mount for an E3D V6 hotend. It was designed for a friend, though gave me some ideas. I may refine this further.

This is a prototype, but should be good. Print it in PETG or ABS. I've included some assembly screenshots and build plate orientation. The B side of the carriage has been revised to print easier, and should print without supports if you have good layer cooling, and can bridge well.

You will need:

  • 1 x MGN12H Linear Rail, ~300mm
  • 6 x M3X8mm SHCS (to mount the rail.)
  • 6 x M3 T-nuts (to mount the rail.)
  • 3 x M3X40mm SHCS
  • 2 x M3X16mm SHCS
  • 6 x M3X10mm SHCS
  • 7 x 5X5mm M3 heat set inserts.

Refer to the assembly shots to put it together. Assembly steps are:

  1. Set 5 of the heat sets into the B carriage. 2 for the E3D mount, and 3 to bolt the carriage together.
  2. Set the remaining 2 heat sets into the belt clamps.
  3. Using the 3 M3x40mm SHCS, bolt the two carriage halves together.
  4. Using the 2 M3x16mm SHCS, run a bolt through the carriage sides and into the belt clamps. Leave at least a 3mm gap between the clamps and the carriage. Refer to the screenshots for orientation.
  5. Line up the carriage over the linear rail, and pull the belt over the bosses and down between the carriage and the belt clamps. Tighten reasonably, and tighten the belt clamps. If you don't have a belt tensioner on your X axis, you can snug the belt clamps to just hold the belts, and tighten the belts after it's all mounted.
  6. If you needed to slide the MGN12H carriage out of the way to complete the last step, move it into position, and mount the carriage to it. Use 4 of the M3x10mm SHCS to secure it.
  7. At this point you can mount your E3D hot end, using the last 2 M3x10mm SHCS. You may need to sand the interfacing surface of the E3D clamp part to ensure a tight fit.

If you have an auto bed leveling solution, you will need a mount that can use the MGN12H carriage bolts as the base. I am going to design something, but for now, there are options out there. The bolt patter is 20mm x 20mm, and pretty easy to design for. You will need longer SHCS to mount if you go this route.
