Addon for my [Christmas Chain](https://than.gs/m/963853). Fun fidget toy you can spin around your fingers making tricks and impressing your imaginary friend! Print a Christmas Chain of appropriate length (I'm using length 14, it feels nice) and attach the **Ring** and **End** to the chain. Ready to spin!

Ringchaku Spinning Fidget Toy || Christmas Chain

Is it an ornament? Disco ball? Crystal ball? This 25cm diameter sphere prints in spiralized mode using only 220g of filament. That means you could print four of these giant spheres with a 1kg roll of filament!

Spiralized printing is great for translucent filament, and because it uses a relatively small amount of material for such a large object, don’t be afraid to use some of your specialty filaments to really make it pop!

For each sphere, you will need to print out two pieces. Be sure to use “spiralized” or “vase” mode and watch the first layer to be sure you have good bed adhesion. When in progress, this is a very delicate print. The ribbing on the outside of the sphere is there to provide some structural support but be careful not to bump it while is it printing!

Once printed, the pieces fit together loosely as in the video, so use a bit of glue if you want them held in place more securely. CA glues works well. Once glued, the sphere is surprisingly strong.

Here are some recommendations for spiralized printing:
- Use thick layer heights, 0.2mm or greater
- Set your “Bottom Layer” to 1
- Try using a skirt for bed adhesion, but if that is not working then try a brim. You will just have to remove the brim afterwards and that can be messy.
- If you get funny stringing on the top layer, try moving the z-seam alignment around

Be sure to print in “spiralized” or “vase” mode! The fit of the lids is optimized for a 0.5mm nozzle. Printing with a smaller nozzle may result in a loose fitting lid, printing with a larger nozzle may result in a tight fitting lid. The “ornaments” are sized to hold standard-sized foil-wrapped chocolate balls (22mm or 7/8 inch diameter). Balls will hold in place on their own or can be enclosed with the “Snapball” pieces. The top of the tree holds a “Large Snapball” that can be filled with Smarties or M&Ms. Use translucent filament to make the treats visible! 

You will need to print one each of the “Trunk” and “Tree Layer” files, two each of the “Tree Topper Snapball” files, and 24 of the “Ornament Snapball” files. 

Here are some recommendations for spiralized printing:

**Printing**

- All parts can be printed without supports.
- Add brims if curling is an issue - especially the smaller pieces.
- Base and middle sections come in multicolor variants for multicolor printers.
- Use a filament swap to get 2 colors on penguin eyes.


**Assembly**

- Add eyes and beak to head section - add glue if these parts are loose.
- Thread TPU filament or similar thin elastic band from the penguin's head to base.
- Pull the band tight and tie the loop.
- Press the knot into the penguin base and trim any remaining cord.

I've provided my PrusaSlicer 3MF file and GCODE for Prusa MK3S+ at 100%. It provides a nice balance of print quality, speed and weight. If you want even better quality, you may want to increase the supports or use 2 perimeters everywhere.

One of my larger Christmas ornaments, it scales down nicely to 75%. I've now tested my PrusaSlicer 3MF file and GCODE at 75% and they print very well. If you want to print a different size and use my 3MF files, you'll need to adjust the range settings for the height range modifiers. PrusaSlicer doesn't adjust them when you scale the model they're linked to. Hopefully, they'll add that in a future release. I added it to their wish list.

I used 2 perimeters for the first 2mm and for the stem at the top. For the rest, I used just 1 perimeter. There are 4 places in the bottom of the ornament that need a few layers of infill (I used grid), but there's really no need to put infill everywhere. I set top and bottom to 3 everywhere except where the arms converge at the top. There, I increased them to 8 to get a clean, solid print. 

The ornament needs quite a lot of supports. I used paint-on supports set to organic.

The ribbons are infinitely extendable! Just keep in mind they can get somewhat heavy, so I recommend using the **Hanging Clip Double** to add more attachment points to your chains.

I've provided chains with lengths from very short to as long as you can diagonally print with a 220 print bed.

If you don't want to print the print-in-place chains, you can instead print the **String Clips** that allow you to use string, cord or ribbon to hang the ornaments!
