A print-in-place puzzle box with a mysterious hexagon glyphs!

Customization The project comes in a multi-color and single-color variants. Both versions work the same way, the multicolor option just makes it easier to read the symbols included on the model.

Printing

  • This print requires a well-tuned printer that can reliably print 0.4mm tolerances between moving parts.
  • This is a long print, but do not rush it. Print at speeds you know will produce mechanically reliable parts.
  • Recommended print settings: 0.2mm layer height, 2-3 perimeter walls, average infill.
  • Do not print with supports.
  • Do not add a brim.
  • Do not attempt to scale the print unless you've already successfully printed it at normal scale.
  • Monitor the first few layers very closely for curling or other print issues.
  • If printing the single-color version, a light color filament is recommended to make reading the symbols on the design easier.
  • If printing the multi-color version, select highly contrasting colors for all symbols and parts labeled "raised".

Verify a Successful Print There is always a risk that mechanical print-in-place designs will fail to print properly. In this case, a failed print could result in a puzzle that is impossible to solve.

If the following checks pass, you should have a functioning puzzle.

  • All six dials rotate freely. If they don't, you may be able to use force to free them up.
  • Is the central core of the puzzle (the area enclosed by all six dials) free to wiggle and raise slightly?

Solution Watch the video above for a step-by-step puzzle solution.

Hi, I have printed this puzzle and it's turned out really well. However after the first advancement of the puzzle, I turned the correct dials shown in your video, but it will not advance a second time. Where am i going wrong?

The position of the dials need to be fairly precise. I would double check that all the dials are fully reset to their neutral position (the blank symbol) and then rotate just the two dials you need for the second step. If the puzzle core doesn't fall to the next level, wiggle those two dials a bit to see if it comes loose. Good luck!

Awesome model! I'm going to have to print this soon! Would it be possible to provide a painted version as well?

Glad you like it! All the parts are split out for easy coloring (no need to paint by individual surfaces).

Unfortunately, painting doesn't always carry over between slicers, so the colors I added to the 3MF and STEP files might not import automatically :(

There are 3 STL's in the folder. What's the difference between the 3? Also: where do I find the multi color one?

The model is the same in all 3, but the different file types have different use cases:

  • .step files are best if you plan to alter the model in CAD software
  • .3mf files include the names of all the individual parts when you open it in your slicer
  • .stl is just the old standard, for those that prefer it

Best of luck with your print and solving the puzzle!
